This is a post I made on another thread, but I decided I wanted people's input on this procedure so I'm making it into its own topic.

I recently got a desert rose and I was a little upset at first that I didnt have a tunable half stop for the 2nd string but then I realized that It did, its just somewhat counter intuitive. I also wanted to get it to the point where the feel stop was as firm as possible. I wanted to see if the 9th string split tuner could help.

Here is what I did. First thing I set was tune the 2nd string pull to pull down to C#. I don't think I needed to change anything from how it came stock, its a long throw with soft feel. Then I used the 9th string tuning nut to get the half stop just right for the 2nd sting so that as the lever is moving, the 9th string nut contacts the finger right when the 2nd sting is pulled to D. Trouble is is that when you lower both strings to C# the 9th string was out. Now, check to see if the 9th C# is sharp or flat. You want it to be flat. If it is flat, skip down to the (*)

If the 9th string C# is not flat change the bellcrank position on the pull to be farther from the cross rod (I put mine all the way out, it ends up being firmer that way). Re-Tune EVERYTHING, just in case. Now you should be able to pull the 2nd string down to C#, and then use the nut hitting the 9th string finger to find your 2nd string D. When you bring your 2nd string down to C#, your 9th string C# should be flat.

(*)Now, here is the magical part! Use your split tuner (the little allen key on the top of the changer) to bring your C# up to being in tune! Everything should be perfectly in tune now!!! I have a nice soft (although a bit long) 2nd string D# - D followed by a very stiff (but short throw) to bring everything down to C#.

Hopefully that all made sense. Is this a good way to set my half stop? It seemed to work pretty good with my desert rose, and it allows me to fine tune all of the tuning points.

Ben, that's exactly how my Zum half-stop is dialed in.

One more thing. If you want to make the feel of the half-stop stronger, tighten up the lower return spring on the 9th string.

The tighter the spring is adjusted, the stiffer the 9th string (and indirectly the final half of the 2nd string) "lower" becomes (D-->C#). This will make the half stop point more noticeable.
