Didn't Scotty try to generate some interest one time with Julian's recordings? I am always interested in such an endeavor with Scotty. Maybe if more would promise to buy them (Julian's CDs) from Scotty he might do it. What is the usual fee to get someone to transfer LPs to CDs? |

There is a legendary recording, I forget the name but I think it only has two songs. It has a bunch of great steelers and they all take solos. Jimmy Bryant is the guitarist. Julian is on there and really stands out. Also Buddy Emmons, Lloyd Green, Jimmy Day, Speedy West, Hal Rugg, Curly Chalker, Doug Jernagin, Maurice Anderson and I can't remember who else.
I have it on cd somewhere. I think it was only available on vinyl but out of print.

Charles,
Scotty gave some real to reals to Mike Miller of Julian at St. Louis to do just that. Mike told me a month ago that the recordings are bad and it would take a lot of work to clean up. It's sad, so little recordings of such a great artist.

Dan, I see your report on Julian. I never did have a good memory and I do not remember giving any of Julian's reel to reel tapes to Mike Miller. I'm not sure if that is name of the person that I sent the cassette tapes to - I do know that he lives in Springfield, MO and I have him in my computer somewhere and one of these days I might come across it. I have the master cassettes here - all except one original that I sent to him so he could hear the second generation instead of the 3rd generation. Once he had listened to them and selected the best cuts I would go back to the original recording for the best sound. I have less time now than I did then so it looks like the live recordings will never be released. Performances live at various venues in St. Louis as well as from the International Steel Guitar Convention. Scotty |

Dan,
The recording that Dave Zirbel is referring to is the first album I ever produced using the pedal steel guitars. It's called 'It's The First Time' and we just recently re-released it on cd. It was originally on vinyl.
Jimmy Bryant, Julian Tharpe, Jimmy Day, Speedy West, Buddy Emmons, Hal Rugg, Reece, Curly Chalker, Lloyd Green and Doug Jernigan. As it is a studio recorded jam, there are only three songs that amount to about 45 minutes of great psa steel playing. Julian is on that recording as are the rest of the above mentioned.
Julian can also be heard on 'YouTube' on one cut off of a single we produced in the mid-seventies. Just type in .... Jimmy Bryant/Julian Tharpe/Greg Allen.....
There will be several other recordings featuring Julian as soon as I can figure out the legalities. As someone said, sometime it costs more to produce a cd than what you could ever get back out of it and I am a poor man. Steel cd's do not fly off of the shelves.
You can order the 'It's The First Time' cd directly from me. Seventeen dollors which includes shipping.

P.S. If I knew how to distribute these cd's to music stores I would. Anyone out there that can send me some ideas? Scotty maybe?
Thanks,
Dave |

Scotty,
Thanks for the correction. It may have been cassettes.
Scotty, you did an excellent job of the recordings that you did with Julian and Zane. I've reordered Take Your Pick cassette, wore it out. I had the privlage of getting Bobby's compulation recording with steel players which had Julian on the first 2 songs.
Dave, come pay day I'll be ordering my copy.
It wasn't that Julian was better than anybody else, it was just his style of playing that has kept me in awe. So different yet unique.

Dan,
You are so right. Julian had his own style that no one copied. When we did the Jamfest's with Julian and Jimmy Bryant in the mid-seventies, they were 6 hours long. It was so amazing that after six hours of jamming with the locals, both Jimmy and Julian wouldn't quit. If there was someone to pick with they would keep going. I wish I had recorded every bit of that. When they would get 'loosened up,' the unreal licks from both of them were so amazing that most of the audience, mostly musicians, probably wanted to burn their instruments.
We do have a recording of one of those six hour sessions that was done at the Horse Shoe Lounge in Muskegon, Mich. Buddy, Julian, Reece and Jernigan along with Bryant. A couple hours of slam bam stick it in your pipe recorded picking from that six hours includig all of the musicians. Scotty flew in from St. Louis for that one. Thanks for bringing up Julian Tharpe. What a monster of a picker. What a great musical mind he had. What great memories I have of the times I spent with him both in Nashville and on the road.

Dave,
You know you had the privilage of spending time with the greats and I appreciate your insight. I've only been playing steel for 7 years and oh what I would give to spend a week with Julian and Zane Beck. Just to study what they did, how they did it, and yes ask the stupid questions. I play Zane's tuning and Julians as well. I've been playing Zane's constantly now for 3 years. When I listen to Zane play, I realize how little I have learned and how much more there is to comprehend regarding his playing.
Just yesterday, I took a song,"Matilda" that Julian recorded, slowed it down to try to figure out what he was doing and it was fast then. His playing was so different but yet structured.
Some ways I feel cheated, no insight into how they thought, why they did what they did. Maybe I'm like Harrison Ford, searching for the Lost Ark.
The only regret I have is not being able to sit with Julian and Zane and learning them.
But realisticly I know I'll never be where they were, and I'm ok with that, just a little taste will do.
Thanks again,

In 2008 when Julian was inducted into the hall of fame I talked to his son and his sister, They said they were working on some unreleased music and would soon be releaseing some new Julian music, Anybody know anything about this? It would be wonderful if this is true. |
