Several people have asked me how I came up with the idea of my 8-string D6th tuning. The answer: I analyzed how the standard changes of both necks of a D-10 related to the root tone of each neck. I combined them all into one tuning, removed the redundancies and then removed the things that I thought I could live without. I pitched it midway between C and E to retain some of the timbre of both necks.
I've created a PDF file that describes the process. It's technical, and it probably contains a few errors. Here's a link to it for anyone that's interested.

Interesting analysis, b0b...
I look at this and see that I could play most of the parts I am playing on my D10.
Obvious this analysis leads to a 6/9 tuning similar to the ZB tuning Zane King has been posting about.
What about 8 vs. 10 vs. 12?
S8 is smaller, lighter, and wider string spacing (I assume?)
By adding strings and making it 10 or 12, you get the lost changes back.
Are the S8 advantages still working better overall for you?
I could see using this tuning, but I would want the extra strings for the added capability.

Vacation's over, Bill. Hey, I'm semi-retired anyway, what difference does it make? 
Scott, the advantage of S-8 is conceptual, not musical. More strings means more options. Fewer strings sharpens my mental focus. I'm not advocating this tuning for anyone but myself. I only created this document to explain it because people keep asking me about it.
The only aspect of E9th that I really miss is the first string.
