Matthew, that must be a '65 reissue faceplate (or a real one) because Fender was still Silverface until about 1980 or '81 when Rivera took over the design, and then the faceplates featured smaller fonts and such. I can tell by the back of your amp that it is indeed a late '70s Twin, but the cosmetics are Blackface. The grill cloth looks repro as well. The late '70's SF's had a red or blue grain going through the weave.

This amp originally had a push-pull master volume which must still be under the BF faceplate. Either way, a perfect amp for steel with its beefy watts.

Chris,

The Blackface was on it when I got it and someone told me there was a limited production of Blackface cosmetics in 1979-1980. I think Ken Fox even mentioned it somewhere. I cannot authenticate the faceplate, but the grill cloth I put on as the original was gone. The date is off of the tranny.

It sure is a great sounding amp.

Wow, that's supercool about the limited run thing. And yes, I can imagine how good this amp sounds in all its 135-watt tube glory. Alas, I am in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, where nothing ships cheap. Sad

There were some late BF amps right before the Rivera era Fender amps, around 80-81, through the whole line, so this probably is the original faceplate for that amp.
I bet it sounds great with those speakers, and weighs a ton!

This is more than a cosmetic issue though; there's no master volume. Also, the multiangled upper back panel was not used in the late '70s. Interesting. Matthew, does it say 135 watts rms on the back??

I agree with Dan - all the 80s series blackface Twin Reverbs I've seen had front-panel logos that looked like this:

This looks to me more like an earlier (probably silverface) Twin Reverb with a repro blackface faceplate. I've known lots of guys who did that with silverface amps to get 'the look'.

A late-70s silverface or early-80s blackface should clearly be labeled 135 watts on the back, and should have a master volume. Anything saying 100 watts is probably earlier. It would be important to know which this is - the 135 watters with ultralinear transformer are quite different than the earlier ones.

The master volume could have been cut out and the faceplate applied over it. But if there was never a master volume, then it's pre-72. But my guess is that (what look to me like) 1/4" reverb send/return jacks indicate a later 70s model.

Those EV speakers are heavy, but they sound great. The 135-watt Twins make great pedal steel amps, to my tastes.

Actually, on closer inspection, this one has the line/recording out jack and the hum balance shaft to the far right of the back plate, which are on the late 70s models. Still wonder about that master volume.... (not that you really need it much).

I dated this amp off of the transformer codes. That date shows 1979 for the tranny. Maybe its 1979 or maybe 1980.

It had no back panels so I made these for it myself based off of others I had to look at.

I will take a look at the volume pot on it tonight.

The previous owner had it for a long long time and claimed that faceplate was on it since he got it.

It does say 135 Watts on the back.

I have one these rare 135 Blackface Twin Reverbs from the late 70's/ early 80's [78 was the last estimate I had from an amp shop(Torres)].Mine has the master volume on it and the face plate matches that shown by
Dave. And the original Fender labeled speakers which are sounding pretty bad these days and soon to be replaced. It is a great steel amp, though way more than I need for playing in my home office. Though I can't seem to let it go for what I could get for it and have to spend just a few hundred less to get a fraction of the amp this is. I had Torres install the Pre CBS cap kit and it really warmed up the tone.
