Cindy Cashdollar's Western Swing DVDs on Homespun are excellent for beginners.

Jerry Byrd's book is essential if you're serious about non-pedal steel but it's fairly pricey so I'd recommend getting a new or used copy of Cindy's DVD to get your feet wet. If you check out the TAB section on the forum you'll find some excellent free C6th arrangements and instruction from Greg Cutshaw.

What are you trying to play? And which 8 string C6 tuning do you intend to use? Until you answer those questions, it's hard to answer the instruction question specifically. But I finally figured out which 8 string tuning I wanted to use by getting all the instructional material I could and seeing what that person's methods had to offer me. So my advice is.....try them all. You'll be glad you did. You'll also learn something from studying some C6 pedal instruction. I highly recommend Jeff Newman's stuff. The Emmons Basic C6 book was very good as well. But You'll have a hell of a time finding it. And it adds just a little to the Newman stuff. Unfortunately, the Herby Wallace book is too pedal oriented to be of alot of use to a non pedal player. Having looked at Mike Neer's page, I would say that it looks very promising.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I should have mentioned that my main interest is western swing.
By the way, what tuning does Junior Brown use??

As a newcomer to lap steel, I can recommend the Cindy Cashdollar DVD's as well.

As well as being a very good instructional DVD, there's useful info in the booklets which comes with them. The exercises are in TAB and there's a guide to other tunings and the string gauges required.

I've blown-up the C6 page of the booklet and have this in front of me when I play. It really helps to have that handy so I can integrate the lap steel in the music I play.

Junior Brown is said to use high C6, with a Bb on the bottom.
like this
low to hi:
Bb-C-E-G-A-C-E-G,
(pretty much what Cindy Cashdollar uses.)

Support the forum and buy any beginning C6 stuff for sale here. 6 string C6 material will work for you, just don't play the bottom string or the top. Just the middle 6.
After you get the basics, maybe get this:
http://pedalsteelmusic.com/instruction/nonpedal.html#S06 (I have it and like it!)

Or, for Western Swing tabs for C6 eight string check out Dick Meiss:
http://www.pedalsteelguitar.net/index.php?disp=detail&subcat=bookcdnp&id=242

Not the EXACT C6 that Junior uses, but close enough. Just a bottom A instead of Bb (more standard, to me anyway).

Dick Meiss's stuff is pretty good. I've got a few tabs from him myself.

I'm interested in the Jerry Byrd material and see there's both a comprehensive book and a video seminar from Scotty's.

Is one better than the other? Should I get both?

Thanks,

Soloman,
If you are going to get the "Jerry Byrd Steel Guitar Course" from Scotty's, You will not need to buy the Other course with the video. It is pretty much a mini version of the "Big Blue Book".
The JBSG Course covers a lot of tunings from Amaj to Emaj, them C#mi7, B11 and C6.the second section of the book is devoted to C6 tuning and the modified C6/A7 tuning.I have the book and I can say it is a great learning material, but if you are looking for C6 material , it has only a portion of the material in this course. My late Mother would say" It has a lot of everything and not enough of anything" ( just kidding Jerry).

Good to hear because I just ordered it. Ha. Actually I do want C6 but I'm super interested in the past evolution of the tunings that led up to C6.

Honestly, I think the Byrd interview in the Andy Volk book sold me. His explanation for his instructional approach left me wanting more. It took me till I read this thread to figure out there was a course!

Another question: What should I buy next? Ultimately I want to be a better Texas swing player. Cashdollar? Remington?

If you are going to learn C6, the Cashdollar video would be best for you. All of the material I have from Herb Remington is for A6 tuning, six string. It is wonderful stuff, but Cindy's book, I think, is for C6 tuning and 8 strings.

I just ordered both of the Cashdollar DVDs myself, but I'm coming from 8-string dobro so I already have Mike Auldridge's CD [http://www.mikeauldridge.com/#SECTION2]. About 1/3 of it is C6, so you might find it useful...
