It was Robert with "Sacred Steel" --the Campbell Bros. doing Jimi Hendrix' ..."Purple Haze"

Robert is an amazing player.. not traditional , but amazing.

Great performance! I think I like this version better than the original! Really strong vocals too.

The music section is at the end of the show Mad .

That was very hot. I love the way Robert and Chuck did the synchronized arm movements toward the end. Very showy.

I don't think I've ever heard those guys play so tight. Stadium rock with 3 steels! Mr. Green

The other players were Chuck and Derick (sp)Campbell from the Campbell Brothers. They were influences on Robert. I've seen the Campbells a couple of times. Now, there's nobody that likes a good shuffle any more than I do, but I was really impressed by the Campbells. They are MASTERS of Sacred Steel!!!

I talked to Chuck about this yesterday. There weren't really any rehearsals, they had done one show together the night before. I thought that Robert and Chuck's playing was very complementary, they both played off each other. For those who are whining about 'why do they need pedals' you aren't getting the rhythm pedal steel grooves that Chuck and Robert are putting out. You need pedals to do that.

For the Hendrix gigs, for Purple Haze it was the three steels, plus Billy Cox, and Chris Leyton (of Double Trouble). No Guitars.

For the other song they did they added Vernon Reid. Nice.....

Word has it that Robert and Satriani spent a bunch of time trading licks back stage. Now that's a little scary. Smile

Maybe now the slide guitars can be put to rest..This shows the versitility of the Steel and shows that its just not a one genre instrument...I enjoyed the performance..14 strings too.

Just a passing RR thought... I picked up a used cassette of Jeff Healey "See The Light" for 50 cents at a thrift shop the other day and have been listening to the songs "See The Light" and "Confidence Man" over and over.
Jeff Healey plays/sounds alot like Robert Randolph on these recordings! Very Cool.
