Where can I find either Pro reviews or User reviews for Lap Steel Guitars? I'm more interested in the new guitars rather than the vintage. Just looking around the different sites, there's not much on actual Lap Steel Reviews. Looking around at the new Lap Steel console models being offered, there can be quit a different in price. On the outside, it's hard to see or understand these price differences. I know the components (wood, electronics, workmanship etc.) can make a difference in price. I'm not saying the higher price Lap Steels aren't worth it, but I'd like to know why they're worth it.
I really don't expect anyone to post comparisons here on the forum. There are to many private builders who are members here to get into this. That said, if you have had experience with the various Lap Steels offered, I'd like to hear your opinion privately. Maybe through a private message.
Thanks |

Oh boy, I just realized I posted this in the Pedal Steel forum instead of the Lap Steel forum. Sorry about that. Can it be moved? |

As you wish.
You probably won't any reviews by publications, because the market for this type of instrument is very small. Your best bet is to search this forum for the brand in which you're interested
Which models are you looking for specifically? We've had discussions on just about all of the current brands in the past few years.
What's your budget? _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Dennis, I have a new Dynalap that I play through a new Fender Champion 600, that I really like. Once in a while they almost sound like the old Hank style, if I was any good at lap steel. I would say I am more of a pedal steel player, but I am not real good at that either. But hey, I'm retired, I don't have to be good at anything. |

I have an MSA Superslide double neck 10 / 8 which I am very, very happy with. Flawless construction and excellent tone. I first got a single neck 12 and after a year traded it back to MSA for the double. I keep the top neck on an extended C6th, similar to Reece's tuning and the bottom neck is Don Helm's E11th . |

I've owned a fender triple neck, a Rickenbacker, 2 super slides, assorted weissenborns assorted weissenborns and dobros.
I currently play an Asher Model one. I love it. I have no desire to get another lap unless it is to upgrade my asher with the Ben Harper model. |

I haven't had the occasion to personally play one, however George Boards offer a wide variety of both single and multiple neck steel guitars.
They certainly look good........and with that kind of craftsmanship going into an instrument one would have to believe that they offer a superlative 'sound' for the player.
I'd enjoy the opportunity to play one.......
You might want to give it a play. George has several demonstration videos on YOU TUBE, a good opportunity to hear what they 'really' sound like. |

Are you KIDDING ME?? ha....it's a no-brainer. The Georgeboard is the bomb man. I've played and had them all> from Stringmasters to even building my own steel: the "SSHAWAIIAN"...and I don't own any non-pedal steel other than a Georgeboard now....>that will tell you right there what I think of the Georgeboard and George Piburn.
The tone; the scale; the craftsmanship; the exotic woods he uses; is second to non.
Just look at this sweet ride(which I currently play)>
See what I've said about the "sweet leilani" that george built for me and what others have said here>

Get one; and you'll never look back.
Actually I'll sell you the one pictured; as George will get me the Double-8 daddy to that one if I want....ah...ha.

The point of the forum is to openly discuss the excellent points you bring up, Dennis, so I'm hoping instead of the PMs the thots are posted for debate so we can all learn and enjoy. I havn't seen those points addressed yet in this thread.
Tom Pettingill's great lookers, the Harbor Lights by Harry Sheppard, and Mike Dotson's Maricopa steels are more excellent products that should be getting in the mix here, and there are plenty more that I can't remember.
It's intriguing how differing electronics inside various woods with metal parts can range so widely in tone and overall sound, and I have little clue why.
I was baffled by my Dynalap, with it's somewhat unconventional build and set up. I had my doubts concerning the ability to translate string vibrations to the wood and eventually my ears, but very pleastly surprised once I started playing.
If you are looking for a great sounding steel you can't go wrong with these. Best bang for the buck out there, really good tone. www.dynalap.com I'd stack them up against any of the aforementioned products for sound. Look's wise tho, we have some overtly talented craftsmen aboard and their work is worthy of the $ commanded. |

I guess I should clarify the reason for starting this thread.
First of all, I presently own a beautiful sounding/playing six string tear drop that Tom Pettingill built. I've had this guitar since January of 09. Here's a link with photos of my Pettingill.
http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=150129&highlight=
I've had a lot of medical problems this past year and developing tremors from anti-rejection medication has been my biggest problem as far as playing guitar. I've sold off a lot of my gear including acoustic and electric guitars, squareneck dobros and several amps. The Pettingill is the one guitar I couldn't bring myself to sell. I'm glad I didn't. I'm giving it a go again and making some progress. At least it's good enough to entertain myself (LOL).
So Playing again has naturally sparked my interest in all things Lap Steel. I've been reading the forum on the subject and searching for reviews on Lap Steels. Like I said in my first post, there's not much out there in regards to reviews.
After going to youtube and listening to a bunch of Lap Steels, I have some interest in several Lap Steels, mostly consoles. So happens they are all by private builders who are members of this forum. I don't mind asking direct questions on music forums about Fender, Gibson or other large corporate builders, but don't want to go there with private builders. Hearing about the Pros are alright, but the cons can open up a can of worms. It would be nice if Guitar Player magazine would do reviews like they do all the other gear. I've found Guitar Player to be pretty spot on with their reviews. Both Pros and Cons. |
