I got the Waltz Across Texas 6-CD set and I'm trying to figure out "I'm a Sad Lonely Man." The psg player sounds like Big-E but the instrument itself is something I've never heard, though I am a beginner. It's a rich octave sound like you get with a 12-string regular guitar but with more bottom. At first I thought it was a church organ backing up the steel. There is also a different singer on this and many of the tracks who I can't put my finger on. Willie Nelson sings on some of the tracks but not on this one.
I had a similar post about the psg on ET's version of "Wabash Canonball"... sounds like Emmons, could be Charleton, but I definitely cannot figure out what kind of steel it is. The tuning sounds unlike the E9 or C6 with which I am familiar.
Sometime I hope to hear from Buddy Emmons about what inspired the specialty steel guitar sounds on some of his songs. Forgive me but I geek out on details like these.

Thanks for the link Jeff. I saw the LP Discography site when I did my search but that particular page eluded me I guess. Looks like the vocal was Cal Smith for that song. Now to figure out what kind of steel it was... _________________ 1981 Push-Pull

I've heard rumors about an experimental Sho~Bud with a double course of strings like a 12 string guitar... I think it was maybe an 8 string model with two strings at each position; that might be the steel on that cut.
It was apparently a bear to tune, so further development was abandoned.
If anyone knows the true story of this cut, or the Sho~Bud with doubled strings, please feel free to correct me. |

Since it was recorded in 65 I would say either a Sho-Bud Fingertip or a Permanent. |

I had a 3 neck sho bud, two 10 strg necks and one 16 strg tuned to A6. It had the dbl strgs like a mandolin. I was in a rock band at the time and used a chordavox. The 16 strger sound like a hammond organ thru the chordavox. I traded the guitar to Reece for a sgl 10 msa when the rock band went defunct. Julian Tharp was in the MSA bldg while I was rrading and he was very interested. cc |

The vocals on "I'm A Sad Lonely Man" is by Cal Smith, frontman and rhythm guitarist with Tubb at the time, and later famous for "Country Bumpkin" and "The Lord Knows I'm Drinking", among others.
The steeler is Buddy Charleton. I have wondered about the somewhat strange sound also, and to me it sounds like an octavizer. I don't know if octavizers existed in the mid-60's. Anyone? |

Well it just so happens when I got through with my lesson with Buddy last Saturday I mentioned seeing a picture of him playing a single neck Sho-Bud and his response was, yep that was a sixteen string with double courses of strings, so essentially an 8 string guitar. I confess I didn't press him on the tuning, just assumed it was E9, he said it had a 'big' sound like an organ and it played very easily and was surprised it didn't catch on. I should see him this Saturday maybe with a little more time to talk, so let me know if there are specific questions you have and I will test his memory!
edit to add===if it sounds like Emmons from the mid 60's but it's not Emmons then it is Buddy Charleton! |

I've gotten a fantastic response on this, thanks fellas. Donny Hinson actually emailed me with some good details. The guitar was a 16-string Sho-Bud that Shot only made a few of, and Buddy C used one on a handful of recordings. But yes, it was mostly a pain in the rear to maintain.
It might just be that we all need to find someone to play church organ with. _________________ 1981 Push-Pull
