Talk about improvising...back in probably 1967, we were in Farmington, New Mexico with George to do a show on an Indian Reservation. The bus broke down and Charlie Justice stayed at the garage while they repaired it. We went to do the show, but there were no mic stands and our PA system was back in the bus. We nailed a broom to the front of the stage, they had one mic which we tied a to the top of the broom, used our amps for speakers and did the show. The show must go on!!!....It did!!
Another time we were doing a package show in Canada. One of the artist on the tour was Roger Miller. The morning after the show I was in the coffee shop having breakfast with George before going on to the next show. Roger Miller came in and sat down with us. He said he had just finished a song the night before that he just knew was going to be a big hit. He began to sing it to George and I....guess what song it was ?
KING OF THE ROAD......The rest is history.
More stories to come!!

Fred
Everyone tells me that. Maybe I will someday. You can't be on the road for 17 years with 3 country legends and not have many stories to tell. Good to hear from you.

Thanks Roger. I will be bringing my Clark. The Emmons still needs some adjustments. Great guitar, but I guess I'm spoiled. I've played the same guitar for more than 30 years. Looking forward to seeing you. |

You must have just got that guitar when I first met you Sonny. You were with Tammy Wynette at a show in Michigan. Imlay City, MI about 1974-1975? How long had you had it then?

I got my Clark in 1971. It has been a great guitar. It's just too bad that Jim Clark stopped building them. I have some parts wearing out, but it is still a good guitar with a great sound. |

Here's another good one. I forget where we were, but I was backstage during a show. A lady walked up to me and offered me a drink from her flask (by the way, I don't drink) Of course I said no thank you. This very lonely lady was Janice Jopelin. I've tried to think about when that was, but I believe it was just a few months before she died.
