This is a concept I had never run across in years of reading about jazz improvisation. Interesting how adding one chromatic note changes a vanilla major scale.

If you want to learn more about Barry Harris's approach, one of his students, Roni Ben-Hur, wrote a very good book on this stuff. It's called Talk Jazz. I can attest that it is a very good book.

The book "Thinking in Jazz" by Paul Berliner also goes into the exercises that Harris used in some depth. They're not specifically written-music examples, it's more the concepts. If you teach, this kind of information is invaluable in trying to match directions to each student.

Andy, thanks for the post. I came up with some of those "grips" while trying to chord solo "You Don't Know What Love Is". It's great to know now what I'm doing. Don D
