For years we've tried to crowbar and pry Mike Neer out of his New Jersey home to get him to come to a steel show.

This weekend he attended and performed awesomely at the Dallas show. He played some amazing steel both on and off the stage. Hopefully he will become a regular on the circuit.

I am so glad I went. I learned so much from the experience, I can't even tell you. But I did make a promise to Rick Alexander that I'd be there and I only wish he was there, too.

I got my cherry popped playing my set on Friday, and it was by far the hardest time I've ever had in all my years of playing music. I was so intimidated and nervous without any cause, because everyone there was so welcoming and warm. However, once I got that set out of my system, I was really able to enjoy all the rest.

Here's one thing I know Mike enjoyed - getting to hang out with Ralph Mooney:

Brad, I really appreciate the timing of that whole meeting and you taking my picture. I have an earful of stories Ralph told me, and I got ask him a whole bunch of questions...he was just the greatest. In my eyes (and many others), he is one of the most important steel players and he certainly has the most identifiable style and sound of anyone.

I asked Ralph if he ever learned Hawaiian style and he told me that in the 50s he got a gig at Disney playing in a Hawaiian group, with the whole costume and even face paint. He said one night some guy kept pestering him for Steel Guitar Rag, so he played and the whole group got fired.

He asked me about my guitar and I took the Clinesmith out and his eyes lit up like a blaze. He held it and asked if it was new and he felt the metal fretboard. I told him about the impetus for the design, and then we got to talking about Joaquin Murphey and Noel Boggs. I'll try to remember some of the details.
