Anyone know who played on Hawkshaw's "Waitin' For My Baby (Rock, Rock)"? The non-pedal solo on there blows my mind. |

Ray:
Here it is:

It was recorded in NYC around 1955, so it isn't likely any of the Nashville usual suspects, unless they traveled for that session only. Maybe Hawk was in NY on personal appearances at that time?
I thought maybe it was Jody Carver, but I can't find where Jody says he every recorded with Hawkins.
Whoever it is on steel, he gets my vote. |

I'd almost bet my last nickel that that steel player is Slim Idaho........
There's several small, rapid, little triplets played on two strings and a couple of little die-doe's that sound like Speedy West in a loose sort of way.
Idaho seemed to have that sort of leaning......... do-ya think? |

Ray,
I was thinking the same thing about Speedy West. Sure sounded like him in spots. I'm not familiar with Slim Idaho (pleading ignorance here!). Would this have not been the right time frame for Speedy or do other things point to Slim since I'm not familiar with him? Just wondering.

Three guitarists are credited. Anyone recognize one as a steel player? |

It sounds a lot like Claude Brownell playing the Eharp tuning. I have some tapes and a CD of his and it sound very much like his style.
I know he played with Hawk sometime in the 50's.

My father Jiggs Lemley played steel for Hawk until around 1952 or 53. Dad was on 16 recordings at King in Cinn.
That isn't dad on the recording for sure, although we were living in Malone, NY at the time. Hawk must have recorded on his birthday Dec 22 that year.
I asked Dad who played steel for Hawk when he left and I think he said Claude Brown. All these guys knew each other, especially if they lived north east of the Wheeling Jamboree.
As far as the name Slim Idaho goes I remember Dad once telling me the best lap steel player he ever heard was an American Indian who was killed on a motorcycle I think in Virginia. His name was similar if not Slim Idaho. best regards, Mike Lemley |

There used to be a steel player in the eastern PA area named Herb (Herby...) Johnson and that is a listing for gt on those credits. Maybe...Maybe not !!
Regards, Paul
Later: Then there was the guy who played steel for Bill Haley and The Comets in their early years but I haven't been able to recall his name just yet...Definately his bag though !!
Later still: I've learned from a very reliable source, The Comet's Steel Guitarist was Billy Williamson. I remember seeing them at carnivals and Fairs in eastern PA when I was a little younger... |
