I am modifying a Steinberger Synapse to make it a keyless lap steel. I need to have the strings with a ball on each end. How does one custom secure and put a ball on a string? Would buy some but they are too long. Would a pair of pliers do to twist it on or would it slip? Any suggestions welcome!

This place makes a pretty slick standard string adapter.
There is also a PDF from that site that shows some other info.

Might be something to check out or at least borrow some ideas from.

Years ago there used to be a thing called a "split bolt" that was made for smaller wire, maybe they are still made somewhere.

I can't imaging how to put a ball end on an already-made string, since the core is what wraps around the ball. You might be ok on the unwound. I've tried it and not had any luck in the past, but I didn't try very hard.
