Julian Lage

I saw this young guitarist live this week in a swing group with my friend John McGann. Julian is only about 22 (about Charlie Christian's age when he set the guitar world on its ear) but what an amazing musician! He played in a lick-free, scale free way that reminded me of a modern update on Eddie Lang or a melodic old-school sax player who really plays off the melody and harmony of the tune.

Mark O'Connor is a brilliant musician but somehow his playing never moves me beyond appreciating his technique and control.
