Paul, try touching the strings with the side of your hand (the hand that holds the bar) or your pinky and ring finger just before the bar touches them. This will mute or dampen the strings as the bar is about to touch them. You can also palm block with the picking hand, but for applying the steel to open strings, I find that the first method is easier. Good Luck!

Check out the late Rick Alexander's videos on YouTube. The techniques he displays are helpful for any tuning, although they're shown on his quad neck Stringmaster.

Here's a good video to start.

Good luck!

thank you george I will that, with my pinki
im finding it hard to do the blocking thing..

normal guitar and the key board so used to taking fingers off to dampen strings or at least on the freting side
Thank you again RdGs Paul

Hi Again
Sorry more questions !
watching the video's links suggested to me
am I right in saying the player is some times picking the steel up and moving to an other fret.
And others times moving the steel while damping the strings ?

Thank you again RdGs Paul

Sorry.. Ive just watched the video's again
and it is self explanatory ( idiot )

[quote="George Piburn"]Hello from George Boards -- Very good observation.

Go back to the Bar Control#1 Video,
Hi Geogeboards,
Thanks and thanks for the video. I found an other where holding the picking hand.that again is very helpful, I kind of got the picking fingers and thumb going in the right direction..
also had a look at your site. once im able to get over the picking and muting bit, i will order so dvd song lessons.
Yet an other question on steel's
do they all come as heavey as they do ??
(I think I have the same as you discribe in vid)
Is there a reason y they are so heavey..

The reson I ask as I am finding them difficult to hold as discribed in vid Due to having tendon repair twice in the same wrist/thumb and has left it week, it dosent seem strong enough to keep grip of the steel when i turn it over..
It has always been a problem on ordenary guitar..

I am deturmand to master the lap and will have to find some way to strengthen it somehow. but Just wondered if there was a lighter way to do it..
Think Ill send it to the gym.

I understand the lighter it is the more weight would have to be put on it ( as explained in vid)
but then dose it make a differance to the sound?
I dont know where i would have been if it wasn't for this forum and the internet..
It is realy aprecated Thank you !
RdGs Paul

Hi I think I have solved the problem for now !

It has to be temp but if I carnt hold the bar up so to move it I carn't even practice !
the bar is about an 1 inch longer than my fingers so right at the bottom of my finger I have taped it on The bar is still long enough for all the strings, and the tape takes some of the weight..
this is temp until I can build enough back in the thumb to be able to hold the weight..
At least this way I can get some practice.. ((still sounds awful))
