After working on my steels over the last little while I've started to think of them as contraptions so I looked up the definition...
"a device or contrivance, esp one considered strange, unnecessarily intricate, or improvised"
I don't think that quite describes it for me but I love the word. Believe me I don't think of the term as derogatory, just thought I'd put it out there for the forumites to chew on. I'm sure there are a few more fitting definitions. Cheers all. |

...far from it. I would call it a "cantankerous hybrid".
But then, "cantankerous" would depend on your own point of view.
It's not troublesome if your expended time is worth the "reward" you get.
I believe to most players, it is. |

Terry, I love it. Instead of just simply a steel player I now have the title of contraptionist. |

It's not unnecessarily intricate or improvised, but it is strange |

Reminds me of a quote from an old article called "Steel Appeal" ...
"... typically seen as some weird Rube Goldberg contraption that few people recognize as a musical instrument until they hear it ..." _________________ 1986 Mullen D-10 with 8 & 7 (Dual Bill Lawrence 705 pickups each neck)

Con
is the expectation that yes, you too can play just like Buddy, Curley or Weldon, which leads to the
trap
of spending 150 per cent of annual gross income on amps, accessories and flipping instruments, a pheomenon you know you should
shun,
but are powerless to tame. _________________ "Gopher, Everett?" |

There you go...At my age "cantankerous contraptionist" is a title that fits like a glove. |

It's a musical implement. _________________ The steel guitar is a hard mistress. She will obsess you, bemuse and bewitch you. She will dash your hopes on what seems to be whim, only to tease you into renewing the relationship once more so she can do it to you all over again...and yet, if you somehow manage to touch her in that certain magic way, she will yield up a sound which has so much soul, raw emotion and heartfelt depth to it that she will pierce you to the very core of your being. |

Ben, that got my day started off right!
The intricacy is seldom unnecessary, but there is considerable improvisation. Bradshaw's inserts, Perlowin's wrist lever, Crawford clusters, and a lot of variety in copedents.
It's not brain science, but I consider myself a Rocket Surgeon. |
