Today for me it's Xmas again, my new Red willy arrived my home this morning together Hilton Pedal and Stroboflip Tuner...I'm having 1 day vacation today!! I'm Playing a lot of stringed instruments including Dobro, so that I was waiting a friendly "girl" here. However after some hours spent to understand how it works mechanically, I'm realizing that such kind of machine with 5 levers and 3 pedals is not as "immediate" as I expected. I think it will take some months in practise, before remember even some main combinations. Isn't it? After my Banjo I was thinking that no other stringed instruments would be more difficult to learn...However I like this Red Willy.
At almost 50 shoots its a challenge. Just to start, could you please suggest me 1 or 2 teaching book for beginners ?
I know also in the forum there are several to buy, but I need another time yr suggestion. The first was perfect, Williams is the PSG I'was looking for.!! Thanks a lot.

Hello Daniele,
I would suggest purchasing the Mickey Adams Beginner's Guide to Mastering the E9th. Pedal Steel Guitar course it consists of a very well illustrated book and a DVD disk and costs 105.US dollars. It is the most up todate and comprehensive course on the market today and will prove money well spent.
Regards
Richard |

Daniele,
Check out some of the Youtube videos. Search pedal steel instruction or lessons. John Davis has posted a few videos that will really get you going fast. He is a great player - all by ear. Micky Adams has many youtube videos that will teach you some licks. He is also awesome.
Since you are a 6 string player, this link will probably be most helpful in the beginning: http://www.steelguitar.com/index.html There is a link on that page to a video which will allow you to apply some of your 6 string guitar knowledge.
My experience with the PSG is that it is difficult at first to get hands and feet to do the right thing, then it becomes somewhat automatic. You will have periods of great advancement and occasionally feel like you have hit the wall. You need to keep plugging and you'll eventually get to the point where you are playing without much effort.
I also play guitar, bass and banjo. The only thing that carried over was the small amount of theory that I understand. _________________ Bad wine is better than no wine. |

Winnie Winston wrote a pedal steel guitar book that comes with a CD. It is a great book for beginners, lots of information and songs to play with tablature.
It is about $30 and can be purchased from bOb on the Forum. Click on the instruction link at the top of the page.
The Willie is a great guitar. I know you will enjoy it. Playing steel takes dedication and lots of practice, but it is so much FUN! Enjoy...

Daniele, I have had several Williams guitars and have loves every one. His new 700 with with Alumitone pickup is outstanding. Please post some photos when you can.

Congratulations Daniele
Williams is an excellent choice
you've got yerself, a mean piece of kit
now as to learning, as Larry suggests, that good ol' Winnie Winston book " pedal steel guitar" has been a bible for many of us, for over 35 years
it'll teach you good basics & get you on the track
there's a lot of info, good theory apprenticeship, & good tabs
De Witt Scott's "Anthology of the pedal steel guitar" is a must have
but then so is " Buddy's Expedition E9"
(get that one now before they're gone, it's an advanced course - for starters, there are a few slow tunes that'll wet your whistle)
available from our good Capt'...
http://pedalsteelmusic.com/instruction.html
now as Tim K suggests, Mickey Adams's videos are great too
Mickey has put up a lot of stuff, full of labor & love
Take your time now, there's mucho
i'm sure his book is excellent
perhaps you could get in touch w: Ferdinando Ghidelli in Caserta if it's not too far from you
he's a darn good musician & teacher

if many find that finding a steeler is harder than findin' hen's teeth in the USA, what must it be like in Italia ?
