Who played steel on Tim McGraw's "Just To See You Smile" ?
Is it J.D. Maness? |

I believe it's Paul Franklin. I really enjoyed another track from that same album (from '98, I think) called 'One Of These Days', and made an effort to establish who'd played on that - it's certainly very likely that, as it's Paul on the one I like, it's him on this one, too. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles and Martins - and, at last, a Gibson Super 400!

Sorry - it's inconclusive! Both Paul and Sonny Garrish are listed as playing on the album, but there's no specific listing for each track.
Now you know - I actually have a Tim McGraw CD in the house! I must say that it's a very well made album, and maybe 75% of the songs are very strong. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles and Martins - and, at last, a Gibson Super 400!

The chorus effect and vibrato are very characteristic of Sonny Garrish. |

When Tim plays the song live, the steel is played by Denny Hemingson.

Roger, "One of these Days' is on the same record as "Just To See You Smile" and Sonny Grrish and Paul Franklin are listed on steel guitar. I think Paul's on "One of These Days" while Sonny plays on "Just To See You Smile'.

The reason I asked is that the tone/timber on that recording is an example of my idea of the "Holy Grail" of pedal steel guitar tone.
I've admired Paul Franklin's recordings with George Strait because I hear that timber in much of his work, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's his playing.
I also feel that Sonny Garrish has always been the least mentioned of the top 1/2% of the very best of the best.... so it wouldn't surprise me one bit if that was his performance either!! I wonder how many hundreds of players have heard his work and didn't know who to credit for the pristine performances he delivers!
I also thought it might have been J.D. Maness. Consistently another tone monster. |

Let me clear this up for Roger and Brentt.
Sonny Garrish and Paul Franklin play on the same album that has "One of these days" and "Just to see you smile"
It is likely that Paul plays on "One of these days" and Sonny plays on "Just to see you smile." _________________ heavily medicated for your safety |

Thank you, Ken. Those songs came out right when I first thought about playin' steel, so I couldn't tell who was on steel right away, but the steel sounds great on both songs.

Sounds like Sonny doing his Franklin style.
The tone is definitely 90s Sonny Garrish. |

How about those songs where Franklin does his Garrish style.
Sonny is definately the most under rated player of all time. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Playing for 54 years and still counting. |

I agree with you there about Sonny, Richard. No criticism implied about Sonny's playing, it just was that it sounded a little 'Franklin-ish' on that particular cut. There are many tracks (especially when he was breaking in and Sonny was the top dog) where Paul evoked Sonny's playing. |

If someone would post it I could tell you for sure.
Sonny plays a PP and I play brand X....Hmmm should be able to tell by the guitars tonal difference? Before anyone flames the thought, I was just kidding, its best we not go there.
Its 6 AM and we're iced in at my house. Somehow I have got to make it down to the row. Good thing I left my car at the top of the hill. Looks like the southern states are pretty treacherous today......Travel safely.
