I was considering changing the 6L6GCs in my Twin to 5881s. I've read that 5881s are designed for a plate voltage of 400. I know the late 60's/early 70's twins have a plate voltage around 475. Have any of you tried the 5881s in a Twin and can they handle the increased plate voltage without shortening their life?

I personally would not do it. 6L6GC tube chart indicates max B+ 500VDC, 5881 max B+ is 400VDC. Twin reverb B+ on 6L6GC runs 460V +/- 20% on AB763 schematic. Using 5881 will cause early break up and distortion, not a desirable feature if you want clean sound. That has been my personal experience.
