I'm having a really hard time finding out the composer of the song When I Hear Hawaiian Music, and the year published.
I have it on a Dick McIntire compilation that's supposed to be from 1936-47, so I'm assuming it was written at least before '47, but can't seem to find out much more than that. This is one of my favorite songs from that period, and especially Dick McIntire and his Harmony Hawaiians version of it.
Does anyone here know, or know where I can find out?
Mahalo!

I think Brad is correct. Mel Peterson is mentioned in "The Golden Years Of Hawaiian Entertainment" by Tony Todaro. The listing doesn't mention that song by name, but does say he composed over 50 tunes, and is best known for "Tropic Trade Winds". He was born in Honolulu in 1907. |

Brad is correct with supporting evidence.
Mel Peterson has written many Hawaiian songs.
Some other examples are
A Song of Old Hawai'i which is considered a beloved classic by Hawaiians.
The Hukilau Song is a popular tune to teach the hula to haoles.
E Naughty Mai Nei
You're At a Luau Now
and many others.
This information was obtained through the credits given on the Hukilau Luaus album. It was not double checked.
Aloha,
Don

Has Mel been elected into any halls of fame?
SOOH and YAALN are just two that should have each been a shoe in for noted immortality. |

Hukilau was written by Jack Owens, I believe this is common knowledge.
Song of Old Hawaii is credited to Gordon Beecher and Johnny Noble _________________ Lap-n-Console Steel Guitar Lessons |

Don't forget Harry Owens and his Royal Hawaiians. Harry wrote a lot of Hawaiian songs including his theme song "Sweet Leilani". If you Google him on the Internet there is a wealth of information. |
