basic question here but-
what would players usually tune the 3rd or 4th neck to and what would be an example of a tune that would use one of these tunings

i can see being able to tell which neck to use for a certain sound, depending on the song - i just wondered what all those classic steelers were doing with the other necks - ie what am i missing - it seems triple necks were the standard set up pre-60's.

Differen't tunings were used for differen't voiceings of chords. Some tunings lent themselves to differen't types of songs depending on how the open scale and root of the chord laid. You couldn't get all chords on one neck so many times you would jump necks to get a better chord and voicing especially many times on the bridge of a song. I used a triple neck from about 1945 to 1959 and was constantly jumping necks while playing certain songs for playing certain chords and passages. Anyone using this technique should wire the necks where they are all open at once and not have to turn a switch to change necks.
