Interesting news from Billboard Biz.
(Sorry if it's a bit stale, just got in to work).

Odd. I thought that ASCAP co0llected a fee from the club owners that covered this already...They pay it and then that takes care of royalties for whoever's songs get covered by whatever bands play there. I cant imagine a situation where they would suddenly go after a club owner because some band played 2 Springsteen tunes,

That was also my first thought on reading this article.
At least that's how it works downunder.

ASCAP does collect from clubs. If a club doesn't pay they send in agents to see if bands are playing ASCAP songs. Someone from ASCAP apparently watched a band playing cover songs(including 2 Springsteen songs) and the club hadn't paid the appropriate fees. So now ASCAP is suing the club on behalf of the songwriters, who's songs were played and Springsteen is just one of those, but he doesn't want his name on the lawsuit.

IF there is an audience and someone is making $$ off it, then yes.

Ah! So they hadnt paid at all. Springsteen doesnt want to sound like the heavy but trust me he'll cash the check when he gets it. Nationwide I'll bet his performance rights checks are pretty sizeable.

I am always amazed at the number of people who don't know about/find outlandish performance rights fees. If you're making money and using one of my songs to do it then I'm entitled to a piece of the pie. ASCAP and BMI do an excellent job of tracking what's being played and getting the writers their due, which they have earned every penny.

If you're on the "Whoa dude music should be free for the masses" wagon then you've clearly already eaten the brown acid. Save that rap for someone who cares.
