First band I ever saw live.
The game is on the telly over here, but with the time difference it will probably the middle of the night before the band are on.

Just finished. It was good, but I would have liked some older material. There's been no substitute in my generation.

I thought they were very good, knowing the limitations of the sound and time to set up, I was impressed. They also did a good job of including a bunch of their tunes in a short period of time. I have seen them a bunch of times in recent years and saw the show they did at the Garden in NYC just after Entwistle died. They have always played a great show.

The best though was when they did the whole Quadrophenia album at the Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ ten or so years ago. The place was on its feet the whole show screaming every word of every song. They have always been a huge favorite of boomers in the new York Metro area.

The band was their usual, Zak Starkey on drums, Pino Pallidino bass Simon Townshend on Guitar and forget the keys, but he is always with them.

Bravo!

The drummer is Ringo Starr's son, Zak Starkey. He's 44 years old and he looks like a kid compared to the other guys.

I've heard that every halftime act for the past few years, including Springsteen, has played to a pre-recorded track... Live vocals and live lead guitar only. Everything else was pre-recorded...drums, bass, keys, rhythm guitar, etc. It makes perfect sense. A show like that can't leave anything to chance. If that's true, the only live performances we heard tonight were the vocals and Pete Townshend's guitar.
Even great classical musicians sometimes mime to a track, as Itzhak Perlman and Yo-yo Ma did at the Obama Inauguration... an outdoor gig in January! Winking

Daltry was on. Nice to see a 60 + guy who still has it. He was really putting out, not holding back. You could tell it took effort for him to hit his old range, but he did it. Bravo.

"My Generation" is their anthem classic, which they're probably tired of.
"Substitute" though, is one of my favorites they didn't play either.
I enjoyed it anyway. Looks like Pete has gone all Fender amps these days!

Yes, that's the one with the line..."I hope I die before I get old". Cool

sometimes it's not about the performance but rather who the performers are...maybe look beyond the performance...

The WHO have risen far above any rock band could have ever imagined as young kids coming to the USA.

The Music, what they wrote, where it is used today, the technology that they brought forward...

A few years back a very young friend told me he was going to see BB King, I guess I must have commented that he was not playing the same now as he was back in the day. My friend said.."But I wasn't alive back in the day "and I want to see him while "HE IS STILL ALIVE" !!

Makes perfect sense to me...

A 60's band still influencing young players...

I thought it was Mr. Magoo & Tom Jones, but it turned out to be Townsend & Daltrey. I wish I hadn't seen that... at least it wasn't The Who, because they had John Entwhistle & Keith Moon in their band. I understand Keith Richard's point of view - "What else are we going to do?" - but that seemed sad to me. Isn't anyone allowed to grow up and write new songs? It reminded me of the last, Sad-Jerry years of the Grateful Dead. When you sing "pick up my guitar and play" you're supposed to play something. I hope I die before I get old....

David, I just read a interview with Pete who is writing a musical, and hopes to have Roger sing on some of the songs, and they are doing Quadraphenia again at Royal Albert Hall.

Knowing about Pete hearing problems I thought they did well.

Queen Latiffah yanked her ear piece at the beginning of the Nat. Anthem, so she must have had monitor issues, and the Stones had no monitors when they played the Super Bowl. Seems to be a hard gig to pull off in such a hurried fashion.

I thought the light show was cool, much better than the trucked-in paid fans that the Boss had last year, light sticks and all.

What were those vintage-looking Fender amps he had? Bassmen (sic Very Happy )?

And how come he's got about eight of them and I don't have any!!!?

Not my cup-of-tea, but a decent performance. I must be out-of-touch - I asked my wife where Entwhistle was. When did he pass away?

I do love red Stratocasters, though! (WAS it a Strat or a clone?)

I'm with Richard - so-so performance, but what a stage show! To have set all that up, have it function flawlessly, and then remove it all in twenty minutes is really amazing. Cool

Roger, I think Townshend uses a pile of Fender Vibro-Kings with an extension cab for each one. I believe the guitar's basically a Clapton Strat but with a Fishman Powerbridge.

Quite right, Bill!

I was never very taken with Hank's playing (although I can see now - fifty years later - how influential he was in Britain), but that first red Stratocaster that Cliff Richard had imported long before we could get new US guitars in the UK was, for most of us, the first Fender we'd ever seen. Fiesta Red with gold-plated hardware and a tweed case - real eye-candy!

It was pretty exciting, I have to admit. It remained Cliff's property but Hank used it until the other guys also got red Fenders - then the original went back to Cliff and Hank had a later one with - like the other Shadows - rosewood fingerboards. (I've had a soft spot for Fiesta Red Strats ever since!)

The first one (a maple necked guitar) is now owned by their rhythm guitarist, Bruce Welch, and he's using it currently on their 50th anniversary tour. Sadly - and for no reason that I can guess at - Cliff had it resprayed white in the '80s. It's been restored now, though. Regardless of all that tinkering, that'd still be one of the most valuable Stratocasters on the planet!

Rick B.: Thanks for that info. I just looked them up, and the new Vibro Kings are $3500 on Musicians' Friend!!!!!!
