In Bobbe`s last newsletter, he writes about the legacy of the West Coast steel players, and mentions that it`s a year since Tom Brumley passed away.

Indeed it is, and although Tom was a Missourian, his
indelible contribution to the so-called West Coast style of steel playing, will never be forgotten.
His smooth, melodic style of playing, inspired so many of us to try learning how to play the steel guitar.
He made it sound so easy and so alluringly simple, although we - who had the honor of getting to know him and his wonderful wife Rolene - learned just how many hours of daily practice made him sound so good.

Tom was the quintessential "aw shucks I`ll -show -you- everything-I- know- in -3- minutes" kind of guy, and as modest and down to earth as you could
imagine.
But aside from his unquestionable talent, his dedication and devotion to excelling at playing steel guitar, was unparallelled.
He might be practicing from 8 a.m.until almost 11 a.m every morning before playing his first show, - in later years. And even on days off, he would invariably wander off to practice his chops.
Discipline, devotion, and dedication!

Tom left us way too early, and it`s still hard to come to terms with his untimely passing.
He was a devout Christian, and somebody wrote on the Forum that his day of passing, was Tom`s greatest Day, - going home to meet his Maker.

On this anniversary of Tom`s death, we`ll cherish the memory of a Steel Guitar Legend and a true gentleman, and we will remember his Rolene in our prayers.

I recently wrote a new instrumental in the good old west coast style of Tom Brumley which I dedicated to him. He had a big influence on me and his playing will be remembered for a long time to come. I will be performing this new song on my set at the Dallas Show.

WHEN TOM RECORDED THE "LIVE AT CARNEGIE HALL" ALBUM WITH BUCK OWENS IN THE 60'S I WAS JUST COMING OF AGE MUSICALLY,. LIKE MOST OF MY GUITAR PLAYING BUDDIES WE WERE ALL TRYING TO PLAY THE DON RICH GUITAR LICKS. I'D NEVER PAID MUCH ATTENTION TO STEEL AT THAT TIME, BUT TOM'S PLAYING ON THAT ALBUM TURNED ME IN THAT DIRECTION. IN PARTICULAR, ONE SONG THAT DOYLE HOLLY SANG WAS "STREETS OF LAREDO." BUCK AND DOYLE WERE CLOWNING AROUND ABOUT THE SONG WHILE THE BAND VAMPED ON A 1-5-1-5-1-5- PROGRESSION. TOM PLAYED A SIMPLE, BEAUTIFUL INTRO TO BRING DOYLE IN, AND I CAN HONESTLY SAY THAT'S WHAT MADE ME WANT TO PLAY PEDAL STEEL. I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT WITH TOM SEVERAL TIMES IN BRANSON AND NEVER GOT AROUND TO TELLING HIM THAT. I WISH I HAD.

That's the opposite of "West Coast style," isn't it?
