my old friend Jud Sandison? I haven't seen or heard anything about him for almost thirty years. The last time I saw him he was playing with a guitar player named Lanny (something) who played an archtop electric guitar and they were working at a club out by the racetrack somewhere in the San Diego Area. Jud and I played some together around 1970 or so and kept in touch for about 10 or more years until I lost track of him. He was an excellent steel player and loved the instrument. He was the first local guy (when he was in the LA area) that told me about the "F" lever as he was using it. If anyone knows about his whereabouts please let me know........Thanks.....JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

Remember that yellow pickup truck he had? _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

When I first met Jud he was playing with Ray Rich at a club in Imperial Beach. He then joined Lanny Prewitt's band for somewhere around two years. Jud and the rest of the band quit Lanny and started playing around the North County. I left San Diego in 1986 and haven't heard of Jud since. Jud and I had identical Sho-Bud Pro-IIIs. I heard his was stolen. The wide Sho-Bud pedals allowed him to play bare footed with only his socks on. The bare feet in no way hindered his picking. He was an awesome player and always spoke highly of Herb Steiner who had been his mentor in LA. My wife and I plan to go back to San Diego this summer and I plan to try and see some of the pickers I used to know.

Hey Herb, I don't even remember what I was driving in those days if you know what I mean! The only thing that seems real is the music and musicians of that era. Leon, when I first met Jud he wasn't even wearing socks, his feet were totally bare but he played very nice. I remember he and Lannie had a smokin' guitar and steel version of the Allman brothers instrumental "Jessica". The last time I saw Jud in person was at his house in the San Diego area and he showed me a ZB that he had and was in the process of converting it to a regular type pulling system as opposed to the "ox yoke" thing that ZB's normally used. I wonder if he ever completed that.........JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

Herb, Jerry, there's a Jud Sandison from Poway, CA. who played with Bud Martin & Company in Southern California with Dennis Caplinger in the group.
Dennis and Jud played on Rick Robledo's 10 Song CD "Back in the Swing of Things".. now, I don't have contact info for Jud, but Dennis has an email under his profile here:

Perhaps you can try Dennis, I get the impression that they're not working with Bud Martin any more as Bud's website's gone.
