THIS IS LONG I've been having some difficulty with my low strings being too floppy on my shorter scaled Stringmaster. I was running 54's with one neck tuned to D and the low string on the other was down to a C. I couldn't find any singles locally bigger than a 56. I couldn't bring myself to order a dozen bigger strings for close to $30 with the shipping and tax(I'm cheap). Just for yucks I went to an old store that I thought had closed years ago and asked if they had any large single strings. The guy grabbed an old GHS string box and said see what you can find. I start digging and found some Ernie Ball 58's and then I found "THE" low string to rule them all. Some real clean GHS 60's that are semi flat. WOW what a great sound, lots of grunt but the smoother grind knocks out a lot of the noise. There was one 72 in there too with a small ball end so it is a guitar string. I don't know what I'll put it on yet. OK now for the sweet part of the deal. I find about 30 strings that I want and he goes up to ring them out(I'm guess $1.50 apiece minimum). He says $8.25!!!! Being the cheap bas_ _ d that I am, I ask him how much for the whole box. He says "flash me an offer". I tell him I will have to go get some cash at home and he says "how much you got on ya"? I reluctantly say $40 and he hands me the whole box "Deal" I've gone through the box and I am guessing there are at least 50 sets of electrics, 30 sets of Acoustics, 30 sets of classical and 25+ sets of banjo/mandolin strings. |

Good find!
In looking at music stores that don't carry any steel guitar sets, I have had good luck finding large strings in the sets that are made for 7 string guitars and the sets that are made for the guys who tune down. There are a couple of GHS Boomer sets with a 70 and a 62 for the low string. |

Indeed, a cool score. But I'd prefer a gold string mine! |

I'll give $45 for them and you can keep the banjo strings. ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Hey wait a second now, I think you're trying to low ball me here. I've got $48.25 wrapped up in these. If I sell them to you for $45 it'll take years and a wheel barrow full of cash to get rid of those banjo strings. I'll pass thank you very much. |

When I first started building lap steels, a guy approached me and asked if I was interested in guitar stuff.I paid $200 and got two boxes of guitar parts he had collected from years of working on guitars.Must have been 20 pickups,a plastic case of every size finger pick,a plastic case full of nuts for every instrument that takes strings, about 20 sets of strings,a least a dozen sets of tuners plus a misc bag of tuner parts, bridges for tele, strats,a acoustic guitars, necks and bodies some with parts on them and the list is longer. I built at least seven lap steels with out having to buy much.I have not tried to sell them because of the used parts.BUT it did give me the chance to hone my building skills and now the newest ones are with new parts are going to be showing up here on the forum.Just have to take photos and get them uploaded. Hope they meet with approval considering the quality of the builders. Its been humbling trying to match Tom' show pieces. Gary |
