I just purchased my first Lap steel and it looks like the nut has been filed down? the Low string is only about 1 mm off the fret board. Should the strings run parallel to the fret board at the same height as the bridge or should it taper?

50’s SliverTone. if that matters

Thanks...M.P.

That is much too close to the fretboard. Yes the bridge and nut should be the same height. No taper. 10 mm is a better distance.

Yea, 1mm is way too close. The action just needs to be high enough so your pics don't hit / dig in and the strings don't bottom out on the fretboard. Typically, 3/8" to 1/2" high is a good target to shoot for.
