An old picture of a good friend of mine. Taken either '62 or '63. He played guitar and bass back then, but soon after took up organ and is still one of the best Hammond players I know. We are both wondering what kind of lap steel guitar he had. He doesn't remember. Can anyone tell? We both wish he had hung on to those guitars and amps... but you know how that goes. Sorry the picture quality is not so great.

The lap steel's lines and sheen look a lot like an Epitomy made by Gulean, or a Gulean branded steel, ....and in either case looks to be refinished gray over the white / gold krackle of an Epitomy (rough surface appears to remain) with some personal custom "curley-ques" and such scattered about (not uncommon back then), ....or it might be a Gulean (they always sported very nice fine woods), which someone obviously painted over IF it's a Gulean.
Here's an Epitomy stripped of it's paint, oiled instead, and a bad-ass bridge replacing the original:
