My son has decided he would like to have a go at Lap Steel and has decided to go for CEGACE tuning. Can anyone tell me what guage the strings will be. My other question is, Is this a common tuning or would he be better using a different C tuning. He will probably want to buy tutor books so the most common tuning would be the best to start with. By the way it is only 6 string at the moment.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Dave,
Click on the Strings link at the top of the page to see the gauges listed for C6th tuning.
Here's one example:
1. E .015
2. C .017
3. A .020
4. G .024w
5. E .030
6. C .036
This is the most common version of C6/Am7, and the tuning I would recommend. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Brad,
I note the gauges that you suggest. What scale length are they for?

Probably the standard scale length of most lap steels, 22.5 inches/ 571.5 mm. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Scotty's Music in St. Louis sells the Jerry Byrd instructional manual, an excellent way to get started. Don't forget all the videos on YouTube. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel
