I'm planning to buy another steel so I won't have to "tear down and move" so often. So,..in an effort to make and "informed decision" on what to buy, I would like to hear some "likes and dis-likes" from the owners of the different "brands" represented on the forum. I'm not trying to start a " run down the brand/builder" war, but as with anything we use, there are areas that we wish were different and could be improved. _________________ Sierra Session D10, Rickenbacker, Fender, Session 400, Classic 30, Harke |

I play a U-12 Carter and got a Thomas U-12 for this same purpose... leave at home guitar for practice.
They are both very good Guitars but there is enough difference between them, that I think in hind site,
that I wish I had two of the same brand. _________________ MSA 12 String E9th/B6th Universal.

I think Ken has a good idea. As much as I would like to have a different guitar for just having something different, I would think moving from one to another may take a little off when playing your gigging guitar. Dick Sexton plays two different guitars and he has made the move to playing the same one home/gig. Today is his first gig doing it. Maybe he'll chime in and give us his 2 cents. _________________ Derby SD-10 4&5 Black!(duh)/

Hummmm! Greg don't tell these guys I actually play out. He's right though, I've decided to do some long over due maintenance on my S10 Marlen. It's been a trooper, followed me halfway around the world and back. But in the last six months, I've found myself practicing on my Derby SD10 every day and only dragging out the Marlen to change strings and gig. Tonight I set aside the Marlen and carry the "New Derby" out into the uncertain world of gigging. These days, I'm less apt to be shot at, hit in the head with a beer bottle or have a Rum and Coke poured into my steel by a pretty, but drunk young lady. All of which has happened... I'm all for gigging the guitar I practice on, or having one just like it(exact changes) to leave set up at home. There GW, my 2 cents... |

Based on the different ones I've played (just a few), I like mine ok. But I've got in my mind that I would like to have a new one or "newer" one. I agree that it makes good sense to stay with like-kind. However, I'm not sure what will happen with Derby in the future. _________________ Sierra Session D10, Rickenbacker, Fender, Session 400, Classic 30, Harke |

I would make sure that any steel I would buy has tunable splits.
For example, A pedal + B>Bb needs to be tunable on all B strings, so you can tune C#>C>B>Bb individually. |

I'll be gettin' a Jackson Blackjack Custom soon to add to my GFI Ultra D-10. The story behind the Jackson is that I was playin' a steel guitar show in Atlanta last year and I heard that the Jackson Steel Guitar Co. was gonna be there, and after my set, I walked to where the Jackson steels were set up and I was lookin' at a Jackson Madison '63 and David Jackson asked me if I'd like to try it out and when I tried it out, I was amazed! I then decided that a Jackson steel will be my next steel, so in addition to my GFI, I'll be playin' the Jackson too, and since the Jackson will be lightweight, it'll be my stage guitar and my GFI will be like a "studio" guitar.
The Jackson will be a 'studio"/stage guitar and I love both guitars.

what I was referring to by Derby's future was, "will someone continue to make them". _________________ Sierra Session D10, Rickenbacker, Fender, Session 400, Classic 30, Harke |

The company has been offered for sale.(I don't think that's a secret) I won't comment as to who. The company is in limbo at this time. New guitars and parts are available. Bob Calloway may comment as to the direction they may be headed. If I have misspoke Bob will straighten me out. _________________ Derby SD-10 4&5 Black!(duh)/

I have owned 5 different brands to date. Won't mention any of them except the one I like the best.
By far, there is no comparison, MULLEN is the one for me. Larry B. _________________ Mullen G2 SD10 3 & 5 The Eagle

I think having a steel to gig with and another permanently set up at home for practicing is the way to go. I also thought about it and, yeah, it's nice if both are of the same make. Currently I do that with a couple of Emmons p/p's.
I guess I wouldn't say that Emmons are the smoothest playing. And it doesn't bother me. That was just a fact that I knew about them from the start. I hardly think about it now. I did sit down at a friend's Mullen and its mechanics worked like butter. I know there are other brands that are fine in their own right, too. But push-pulls, quirks and all, are comfortable for me now. |

I look forward to havin' another steel to take to shows and play at home along with my current steel. The Jackson I'll be playin' is a Blackjack Custom, and I hear it's lightweight, so it'll be played not only at home, but at steel shows too. There's nothin' wrong with havin' a steel to practice with and a steel to play onstage. The Jackson will be an addition to my GFI because both steels are wonderful guitars.
