I'm getting ready to build a tube amp for my pedal steel. It's going to be a 100W clean amp, not too different from a Twin Reverb. I have an open-back speaker cabinet that I'd like to use with it. It has a 12" speaker currently, but the cabinet is big enough that I can enlarge the baffle hole and replace it with a 15" speaker. Can any of you recommend a 15" speaker that would work well for that?
Thanks,
John |

Just my opinion.
My all around favorite is a JBL D130.
Mr. Walker at Walker Stereo Steel can help. |

Thanks, Ron. Are the D130 speakers still made? I can't find a source for new ones.
Any recommendations for current production speakers?

John,
To my knowledge they have not been made as new for a long time.
Shop around before you buy. There is an active used market.

Just a quick follow-up on this. I ended up asking for and receiving a new Eminence Commonwealth 15" for Christmas. I've been playing it with a couple of different amps, and I'm liking it a lot. Thanks again for all the helpful suggestions.

Ken, that amp+speaker sounds great!
The Eminence weighs a lot more -- 22.6 lbs. But I'm building my amp as a head, so I don't have to carry the whole thing at once.

I have the Weber 4ohm Michigan and California and they both sound pretty sweet to me with Twin Reverb type amps.
I have the 8ohm EVM-15 which is also a great sounding speaker but is heavy.
If you ever get to Portland you're welcome to check 'em out.
I'm not going out of my way to try to sell them, but they are available if you are seriously interested. |

T.A. Weber, Ted's son, was in L.A. for the NAMM show and stopped by my gig Sunday night. Very nice guy. You might want to check out their products. Their California series is supposed to be very close to the D130, which is long out of production. It cost me more to recone my old JBL's than what new Webers sell for. |

I like the K-130, I've got one in my Twin Reverb and another in my Sho-Bud Christmas Tree. |

Like Joe, I too, like the K130 best. _________________ To write with a broken pencil is pointless. |

This is copied from a recent topic on PV amps:
I've been using my NV112 amp, coupled with a Weber "Michigan" 15" 4 ohm, 100 watt speaker (in a seperate cab) for over 10 months now... and for my money there's nothing wrong with the NV112 amp... just needs a different speaker (I absolutely love the sound of the Weber, on both e9th and b6th tunings!). The weber also only weighs 12 lbs, but sounds like a scaled down BW (that is to say it IS only rated at 100 watts).
It takes a really big venue for me to use anything else these days.
Here's a look:

and here's what it sounds like miced off in a studio:

I did install Ken Fox's mod, and on live gigs I use a TC Electronics "Nova Repeater", which I'm also really pleased with.
Weber says the "Michigan" is modeled after the older EV 15". For my friends in LA, I'll be bringing this amp/speaker rig to the next Perl Jam. _________________ Dave Wren
