This song answers (in my opinion) why we choose this incredible instrument. The lyrics backed by Mr. Dicky Overbey just literally cut me to the bone!!!

Dickey is one of the great players, no doubt, but that was just a bit too maudlin for me!

I agree, Roger. Heartfelt, but over the top for my taste as well.

Phew!!! Thanks, Barry - I thought I was going to get roasted for the insensitive, unappreciative slob that I am, as well as getting my Forum membership revoked!

It reminded me of records they used to play during intermission at the drive-in theaters in the 60's and 70's.

I'm sure he played it exactly the way she wanted it and probably nailed it on the first take. Smile

I really liked it but I'm a sucker for a crying steel guitar anyway..... He sure proves what an expressive musical instrument a pedal steel is.

Mr. Overby has been has been accused of "Overplaying" before on this forum. First let me say; where else are you going to get 63 awesome licks in one song?

And this next statement is not pointed at anyone in particular but; I find it odd that some can always find ways to criticize some of the greatest steel guitar talent of our time who has been there and done that and still is doing it.
Do you have the resume to justify your critique of a seasoned veteran like Dickey Overby? Just my thoughts as were yours.

What does anyone's resume have to do with anything?

Greg, if you don't play fiddle (if you do, substitute an instrument you don't play), or play it but not all that well, or have not played it much professionally-- does that mean you're not entitled to have, and express if you want to, an opinion about anyone's fiddle playing, because you don't have a resume as a fiddle player to "justify" your opinion?

Just my thoughts as were yours. Smile

I only said I didn't much care for it - this place gets worse every day! Maybe someone should post a list of the players that we are not supposed to criticise! I LOVE D.O.'s playing normally, and he certainly executes this in an accomplished manner - I just thought there was too much filling and it was a bit slushy; I disliked the song, too.

As Brint said, it matters not whether I'm good, bad, or even a non-player. To clarify - I don't need ANY kind of 'resume' to proffer an opinion on a piece of music, art or literature; no-one here cares what I think, I realise, but still I persevere, and 'post' anyway!

I've had a couple of unpleasant PeMs, too - I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised after previous experiences with this Forum.

Come on, guys - lighten up!

The song is about the STEEL guitar, what did you expect to hear, BANJO and HARMONICA ? I didn't really care for the song either but there's definetly some nice steel playin". Most comments on here are about not enough steel in the mix.

I don't think that's so bad. However anything more than "a bit" might get you in serious trouble. Laughing

I found out a long time ago that it's best to never mention Jerry G***ia. So make sure he is on the top of the list. Whoa!

Excellent playing, but totally overdone IMO. I probably wouldn't have bothered with the steel guitar at all if that style had dominated on country recordings around the time I started playing string instruments.

If I want sentimental sounds on steel, I rather go in this...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mK5ROydJFTE
...a bit more controlled direction.

I think this song is corny. The lyrics killed it for me. Sort of reminds me of singing Kum Bay Ya around the campfire and roasting marshmellows. I always enjoy Dicky's playing. Kimberley is a good singer. I've heard her on some good stuff. Smile
