My good friend and bassman Don Yount passed away Wednesday evening May 12 at 10:00 PM EST.... Don had been suffering first with a tumor in his lung which was diagnosed as inoperable! After starting his chemotherapy treatments (he went through two of them) he had a stroke and was left paralyzed on his right side and unable to speak or eat. I was with him the first part of this week and last visited him on Tuesday the 11th. Later that day he was unable to breath on his own and was transported by ambulance from the rehab center back to ICU at Riverside Hospital in Newport News, Va. He was put on a ventilator. He kept getting worse and finally sucumbed to his illness and passed away........
Don was a good friend on top of being a great musician. He was a guitar player's dream to work with. He sang good, picked good, and did all those songs that six stringers like to play such as "Workin' Man Blues", "Ramblin' Fever", and all those Haggard tunes in addition to the Willie & Waylon stuff.......
Don's remains are being cremated and there will be a visitation at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home in Hampton, Va. on Monday night from 6-8 PM and the main service will be Tuesday afternoon at 2 PM.
He leaves two children, two grandchildren, and his wife Chris to mourn his passing along with numerous friends in the area and Europe. Don was a US Army veteran and spent over twenty years on Germany where he met Chris who was a British citizen. They'd been married 32 years at his passing. Don was 75 years old. RIP my friend......JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

Jerry, so sorry for your loss. It is so difficult to lose a great friend that you have shared music with over the years. We've all been there. May the Good Lord give you peace of mind and fill you with all the great memories that you have of your friend.
Take care _________________ Ray Harrison

Sorry to hear this sad news, Jerry. I've been following your posts on Don's illness hoping that there'd be better news soon. Losing friends is difficult, of course, but sharing music creates a special bond.
My sympathies to you and all his family and many friends.... _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles and Martins - and, at last, a Gibson Super 400!
