This week let’s introduce chromatic sounds to our scale patterns by adding notes outside the major scale into these scale patterns. Chromaticism can be defined as “interspersing scales tones with non-scale tones in half step intervals.”

Here are the scale tones of the C Major Scale: C – D – E – F – G – A – B - C

Here are the scale tones outside the C Major Scale: C# - Eb - F# - G# - Bb

We can begin to use Chromaticism by approaching each chord tone (Root - 3rd -5th - 7th) from a half step below.
The chord tones of a C Major 7th Chord are C – E – G - B:

B to C (Root)
Eb to E (3rd)
F# to G (5th)
Bb to B (7th)

The first diagram shows our CM7 Scale Pattern with intervals located a ½ step below the scale tones of the CM7 Chord = C-E-G-B
(1/2 step intervals in parentheses = B-Eb-F#-Bb)
The second diagram shows two picking examples: (1) using the B to C (Root) chromatic interval – and (2) the Eb to E (3rd) chromatic interval.

(C-6th w/ knee lever lowering 3rd string C to B)

Here's another example of a half step into a 3rd plus examples of half steps into 5ths.

The first diagram shows: (1) another Eb to E (3rd) chromatic interval (2) the F# to G (5th) chromatic interval.
The second diagram shows: (1) another F# to G (5th) chromatic interval (2) an additional F# to G (5th) chromatic interval.

(C-6th w/ knee lever lowering 3rd string C to B)

Here are examples of a 1/2 step into a 7th plus a long scale run using what we've learned so far.

The first diagram shows: (1) Bb to B (7th) chromatic interval (2) another Bb to B (7th) chromatic interval.
The second diagram shows: (1) an additional Bb to B (7th) chromatic interval (2) a chromatic type run using (B to C) > (Eb to E) > (F# to G) > (B to C) in half step intervals - ascending up the fretboard.

(C-6th w/ knee lever lowering 3rd string C to B)

Tip of The Week: These are very basic examples of Chromaticism. Try stringing these examples together in longer scale runs. If you woodshed these ½ step intervals on a regular schedule, you will find chromatic notes showing up in other areas of your C-6th work. Without even thinking about it – you will start to hear yourself playing chromatics in your melody lines, your blues lines, your scales, chords, arpeggios and steel lines. Next week, we will introduce half step intervals to the 6th and 9th tones of our C Major Scale Pattern - for even more chromatic combinations.

Robert, the lessons have been a great help, however what would be real helpful is having you play the licks so we could hear them, Thanks so much for your dedication

Frank Marino, Thanks for checking in. I’m working on audio examples for the future.

Lesson #15 on chromatics wasn’t cutting it - so I have revised it with better text and better examples. Hopefully, the examples will translate better off the paper. They have longer lines and more syncopation. Thanks again for your reply and let me know if you have any other questions. (Look for Lesson #15 Revised – on Saturday)
