I want to know what are the best strings to use on pedal steel guitars ...

I always use D'Addario pro steels ,,
love the pro steel on electric guitar ,,and ,, same brand in bronze on the martin 35 ,,

but I've had some steel guitars come in the door that have the smoothest sound and feel ,,and I'm starting to think I might like to try another string
the D'Addario pro steel is a great sounding string but I think its a bit stiff ...

You are opening a can of worms here. Smile

There is no BEST string to my knowledge. Try several different brands and see what works best for you.

I like SIT brand strings but that does not by any means mean they are the BEST.

I just buy the least expensive ones I can find and change them often.

I tend to agree with Alvin.
I buy Ernie Ball strings by the gauge when they are on sale.

OK, let's go the other way....what strings do I need to stay away from?
So far I have tried ghs, Cobras and S.I.T. and they all sounded good to me. The ghs is a little warmer I think than the others, but like I said, they all sounded good on the Ritt.

Thanks,
Wally

SIT strings seem to work well on this Derby. So far I haven't had a problem with "tuning" or "breakage" and the sound is good "to me".

I normally use Jagwire Lloyd Green. I had some sets of SIT given to me and they sound just as good as the Jagwires. Neither string breaks prematurely and they don't go dead too soon either. So I mean you can't go wrong no matter what string you use.

This subject has been beaten to death in numerous threads. But one more time, I still use Frenchy's Silent Series in nickel. Jody.

I use Herby Wallace Jagwires, on 5 different guitars, never have had a string to break.
I left a set on my Pro 1 for five months, set down to play one day and they sounded very bad, time to chang but they did not break.
Before that I used S I T, strings, the 3rd would break at 3 weeks not to fail, only broke 1 5th string while using CIT.

Jags for me.

I have no idea what's the best strings - too many around, but when experimenting I have always ended up going back to D'Addario for their balanced response/tone.

Maybe a better question would have been, who stands behind their strings the best.

I've never seen any other on here do what I've seen Danny do, for folks (especially one person) I could name that definitely wasn't the strings fault for breaking them during tuning, and yet he sent the dude a bunch of replacements.

It doesn't get any better than that. I'd have been ashamed to have taken them, had it been me.

Jags ARE Top Shelf, and so is the man behind them!

Back in the 70's when I had a music store I sold Ernie Balls- had the complete line; single gauged and sets. I also sold Sho-Bud pedal steels and played one - always blamed the guitars for breaking strings. I now think it was the Ernie Balls that were bad and use Jags or Cobra Coils and seldom have a break. One of Bobbes newsletters covered this topic real good.

CT,

If you'll edit your reply and use the format below for placing the URL, it won't take up near the screen width, for your URL, making it easier for folks to view the thread.

[url=

After the = (without spaces) copy the total URL and paste it there. Then use the total bottom section to put at the end of it, (without any spaces) and it will simply say: Click Here

Just a suggestion, but it does make it a lot easier to read the thread at less than full screen. And it keeps the format in order..... Smile
