Our Church caught fire last night, and burned most of the upstairs. Thank GOD no one was hurt and no fireman were hurt. My Sho-Bud Pro 2 custom and Peavey Session 500 were in the sanctuary. They both suffered smoke and water damage.Servicemaster has them now ,has anyone had a similar situation, or have any thoughts on it? We have insurance. Thanks Guys

Oh no lar, that lovely wood burns good, is it destroyed totally? Sorry to hear it, one of the finest steel guitars in the world as far as i am concerned. Smile

Larry,

Sorry to hear about the fire. Hopefully all will turn out OK. I'd be most curious about how the insurance is handled and covered. There was a thread about this topic many weeks ago. The experience you are about to encounter would help others get some real time feedback on insuring their instrument.

We had a small fire in our basement next to our 80 gallon pressurized water tank. The blaze melted the flexible hose to the pressure switch and the water shot out to the base of the blaze and put the fire out. All I knew was our basement was totally full of black smoke, called the fire dept., they came in with oxygen masks and found the fire was out but smoke damage was horrible with the moisture from the water mixed with the smoke. All my amps including Peavey 400 and many old Fenders all were fine but the moist smoke seemed to tarnish all metal corners and such.

If insurance can replace it without raising your rates, go for it. Otherwise, everything should be in good working order probably, just tarnished. Just another road scar to tell a story about. Smile

Larry, I don't know yet about damage. The fire restoration people told me they would farm the Sho-Bud out to a specialist and it would be gone over with a fine tooth comb. I agree about it being a great guitar.
Jeff,Thank You,We had insurance at the church and also, the church bought a rider for additional insurance for the musical equipment, so it is covered.I will definitely keep you all posted as to the outcome.
Raybob, sorry to hear about your experience, but Iam glad to hear your amps turned out ok. That is encouraging. Thanks

That happened to me when some "broken-nosed" guys burnt down a club in Milwaukee years ago. Smoke damage. Took the guitar apart, cleaned and polished off every thing. Had to refinish the body, but it ended up better than when I bought it.

Heh Larry: Bad news about your equipment. I learned something from a friend who just had a house fire. It is critical that the metal parts of your guitar be cleaned immediately as the smoke carries corrosive chemicals in it that will act to pit the metal. I would guess the same applies to the circuit boards and chassis of the amps. Fire restoration folks are knowledgable about this phenomina. If not cleaned and neutralised this damage can continue over time. In other words what seems to be okay today may not be next year. Try to find a way to cover any future problems if you can.

Good luck Pard,

Jim

Players in this neighborhood will probably remember the Trail Dust Steakhouse fire on Mother's Day 1999.My MSA Classic D10,Session 500,and six string amp were there.Although the front part of the building looked as if it had been hit by an airstrike, the back part, including the stage area, was relatively intact, although the FD had put several Olympic-size pools' worth of water on it and everything was soaked. After a couple of days,we were allowed to get our gear.I'd left the MSA covered,so aside from getting wet and permeated with smoke film it worked fine after a good cleaning.I cleaned the amps and let them dry for a couple of days longer. They worked fine too, although the smoke odor lingered for a long time.
The fire was caused by the employee responsible for starting and maintaining the fire pits where steaks were cooked.Through an interpreter,he said that the fire got away from him when he started it and the dampening blanket that was supposed to drop down didn't deploy (IMO he didn't know how to deploy it) and the building went up.
I was lucky in that my gear was relatively undamaged. The guitarist and bassist left their instruments unprotected on stands, the board and the drums hadn't been covered,so all that stuff was pretty well toasted,so to speak.

Larry,
I just had my stuff added to my homeowners policy, it is insured for replacement value (which beats zero)I used the forum "for sale" listings to establish a value point...If a guitar like your's is for sale for say $1500, thats what will be paid. The added price is $34 per year for $7040 coverage with Nationwide. It is covered anywhere it is,home, car,or at your non paying venue.

The only problem, it doesn't cover equipment on a paying job, which is not a problem for me as I only play at Church, and non paying jams, etc.

Replacement cost beats the h..l out of zero. I purchased a S12 Sho-Bud Pro I from David Jackson in 1978 for $1500. In '91 I was renting an apartment in Cincinnati with renter's insurance. Came home from a benefit and left everything in the trunk except amp in back seat, parked in apartment complex lot. That night the car was broke into with everything gone. In '91, Sho-Bud was out of production. I found a Sierra S12 for $3100 to be the only thing I could replace it with. Renter's insurance was for replacement value. They sent a check for 1500, then sent the balance for total 3100 after I sent my receipt for the purchase of the Sierra.

Sure do miss the tone of that old Sho-Bud though. Crying or Very sad

Larry, my house caught fire over two years ago. My Emmons was in the computer/music room in the case. I was fortuante. The amp of mine sutained some smoke damage, however I checked it out plugged it in and it worked. I took my guitar over to a fellow steel picker's house and we blew it and the case out. with an air compressor. and we lubricated the changer and under carriage. I am thankful that no one was hurt and I hope you get back to playing soon.

As with most musical instruments, the longer you have them and maintain them to play just the way you want, the more personally valuable they become. Some things are priceless, regardless of the collectible value placed on it.. I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I only hope that your guitar is salvageable to where it once was for you, and if not, that whatever you get to replace it is equally rewarding musically in the years to come.
Regards,
Clete

A great big THANK YOU to Show-Pro for all their help.
If you need anything steel guitar, please see them. Also they have a new CD of steel music played on Show

I'm trying to remember who it was in England who had his Sho-Bud totally burned to a crisp, and had it completely rebuilt, rather than buy another, because the underneath was signed by his favorite steel guitarists.

Glad to see your story turned out well, Larry. Probably the best Christmas present you could have wished for. Very Happy

Alan,
I think the person you're referring to is Mickey Byrne.

and Larry, I'm glad to hear everything turned out OK with your Sho-Bud. When you do the Lord's work, He will never let you down.

Wow! Reading this thread brings back some terrible memories for my family and I. Thank God that we were not home at the time, but on Jan. 10 2008 our house burned to the ground including my Sho~Bud Super Pro and all my gear except for a Session 500 that was in a local repair shop. We had pretty good insurance but you never ever can get back what is lost. I'm just thankful there wasn't anyone hurt, I feel terrible for anyone who has to go through this type of thing. It really hits home to me. Best of luck to all who finds themselves in these situations.

Well remembered Nick and Paddy...and there was a lovely thread on this very forum with before and after pictures. It was a total BBQ job till Dave Langdon completely "ressurected" it. It was a square front 'Bud, but because of so much damage, it had to be made into a round front. Paddy you're right, it now looks better than it did originally. Both the 'Bud universal and my Carter universal are set up in my front room.I got the 'Bud in 1977,and the Carter in 2003.
