Ron, I'm sorry to see him check out as he was an inspiration to me in that he used a thumpick and fingerpicks just like steel players do but on standard guitar. Another one of the same era who played that way was John Cippolina of Quicksilver Messenger service. I play that way also and wouldn't do it any other way........JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

He was a key part of the sound of Big Brother. Great interpetive guitarist. Once the suits got ahold of Janis and read her the riot act for sellout in the back room it was all over for me. Nothing after can compare with the raw San Fransisco sound of Big Brother. The suits ruined her. Look at that video clip. Very few today compare with her. She was an electrifying singer/performer, and the guitarist had it. |

The video clip is not Big Brother, and the guitarist in the clip is not Gurley, but Sam Andrew, who continued with Janis in her later band.
Big Brother didn't have horns or organ. Andrew and Gurley both played leads with Big Brother, and Andrew was the one who at least somewhat had it together. Gurley tended to play wild, sloppy quasi-atonal solos, apparently, as I've read, under the illusion he was emulating John Coltrane. An example is his soloing on "Ball and Chain" in the Monterey Pop movie, and on the Cheap Thrills album. |
