This hollow steel bodied 6 string lap steel guitar ( 1940-3 ) is in very good condition, the horseshoe pickup is 100%. sounds great, sustain is great.
Small wear marks of the enamel on some of the edges.
The tone and volume knobs are white and should be black( so Im told ) so its not totally original but apart from that everything else is. £350, includes delivery UK.
Sorry havn't taken any photos of it as yet but if you are interested email me at alanmiller@dsl.pipex.com or phone 016977 46524, and i will email some pics to you asap. |

Alan, being as this is from transitional years, it's quite possible that the pickup is one of the 1 1/2" one's, is it ?..as for e-mailing pictures, if you can do that then why not post them here when you have them ?
I could be interested myself.. |

I didnt buy this as a collector so I dont know a lot about that side of instruments but comments would be interesting.

I ain't no expert, but your steel is a 1938-1940 at the latest, Rickenbacher Model 59. *And it has a non-adjustable 1-1/2 inch pickup*. All model 59's have this pickup, and are the ONLY Rics to have a non-adjustable pickup. They came in white crinkle, black crinkle, and black-to-light gray sunburst finish like yours. The later similar model NS had the 1-1/4 inch adjustable pickup painted black, and had a black-to medium gray sunburst body, or all gray. Don't take this the wrong way, but I think you should double-check your tape measure. The only reason I know all this nonsense is because I have the exact same lap steel, but yours is older since it has the 2 knobs, one on each side. mine is a 1941, with both knobs on the outside.
*The pickups are slightly less than 1-1/2, but only slightly. But this does not mean they are the 1-1/4, which measure dead-on 1-1/4.

Kevin, thanks for that information, I measured the pickup wrong, it is a just under 1-1/2 inch pickup.
I did sell the guitar some time ago to a friend who lives locally he is a good player and has over the years got deep into Hawaiian music, since getting the 59 he bought a model B and a wooden bodied La Scala made by Harmony guitars, a fender stringmaster and is now looking for another model B and an Electro silver.
Basil , you will probably remember the guy I sold it to he was Brian Chalkers lead guitarist for some years , Tony Renney. He still lives up here in recently flooded Workington in Cumbria, fortunately he lives much higher up in town than the river. |
