I've got it back together and sounding good.I saw on line how to level the spider and tried it..It definatly sounds better and louder..Two of the legs were very high and one other looked like it was maybe not making contact with the edge of the cone..
Here's a pic of how I did it.

Hey, Joe, if you can get hold of the Paul Beard video on Reso setup, it has lots of great info and tips, and will be a big help. |

The saddle insert is notched for 8 strings. Is it normal to use an offset spider for 7 stringers and 8 stringers? |

I have a factory made Dobro 7- string made in the early 70's. It came with split bridge inserts (3 on the bass side and 4 on treble side). However, the string spacing was not very good. Earlier this year, I put on the offset brdge, a one piece brige with the strings spaced right, AND a modified 7 string tailpiece from Bread guitars. It sounds great and plays better. Also, I do not notice any difference in the fret position and tuning with this offset.
On an 8 string the split bridge works fine.
Thanx,
Jim |

Jim - I'm familiar with Beard's modified 7 and 8 string tailpieces; however, I'm not aware of how Dobro, or OMI handled the problem in the 1970's. What did the original tailpiece look like? |

Many/most used their 10 string trapeze tail.
Today a typical 8 string would use a standard spider with wider split inserts. The 7 string would use an offset spider with a solid insert.
But..there aren't any rules. _________________ Howard Parker

The original OMI Dobro used a standard 6 string tailpiece and put the 1st and 2nd string in the same hole. This caused a very sharp angle going to the bridge and also put extra stress on the metal around the string hole, result was the hole broke.
I replaced it with a Dobro 8 string trapeze from OMI, which was a little better. Only when I installed the Beard version did it fit properly with proper string angles.
I have worked on a few 8 string Dobros and some had solid inserts and others had the split inserts.
The 7 string in a G6th tuning, now. Used to keep it in a C# minor for Hawaiian and western swing stuff.
Thanx,
Jim |

The pic above shows the standard 6 string dobro tuning.I've since added a high G,So it's being used as a 7 string.I have considered an E on the 8th string, probably a middle E.Some times I feel that I might need a 6th chord, but not often.Besides I'm starting to get the hang of slants. |
