We've discussed herein on a number of recent occasions, all kinds of viewpoints relating to vibrato.

TELL ME, please: When plucking harmonics or an open chord (NO BAR!)........can you get a vibrao sound without using excessive REVERB?

Just curious...... What's YOUR take?

You can use a vibrato pedal. Very Happy

I can't think of a way to manually execute vibrato on open strings of a steel - aside from shaking the guitar in some way, or somehow manipulating the strings behind the roller nut (without causing a muting of the notes).

Has there even been a vibrato bar added to a steel, I wonder?

...and here's what Basil was referring to...

I built this one as an experiment several years ago. My idea was to rest my palm on the tremolo arm and add extra vibrato. I built it in a weekend. It's basically a plank with pick-ups. It sounds okay but the tremolo has very little use. I wouldn't build another one.

I did some experiments a few years ago using a vibrator attached to a tone bar. (Before anyone's mind races away, I should mention that it's the sort of vibrator used for stiff necks, etc., not the other sort, although they would work just as well. Very Happy )
It actually worked, but was a bit cumbersome. I've thought of taking the mechanism of one and putting it inside a hollow lap steel, attached to the bridge.
Somehow I can't imagine an electric vibrating tone bar being a huge overnight seller. Shocked

I like the whammy bar idea on a steel.

I wondered if you could get it by playing putting pressure on the strings on the headstock side of the nut...then i watched the video Bob H posted Very Happy

cool. I love stuff like that.

Sometimes on a telecaster I will grab the headstock in one hand and press hard in the opposite direction on the body to get whammy bar bends. I wonder if something similar would be possible with a lap steel?
