The Bebop Cowboys, Toronto's premier Texas Swing band, is celebrating its second anniversary on Wednesday Dec. 4th at 9:00 PM at the Cadillac Lounge
1296 Queen Street West (just w. of Dufferin).

Be prepared for some hot pickin'! Featuring no other than the fine playing of Burke Carroll on his Fulawka double neck steel.

Hey, Bob
Is Burke not traveling with Luther on his current tour?
They're here in Kalamazoo in a week or so but, unfortunately, I may miss them this time -- ESPECIALLY if Burke isn't on board.

Hey Smiley,
The Horseshoe is still kickin' on Queen Street in Toronto. It has featured bands since the 40's. The music played at this venue these days varies from country, blues, folk and alternative rock. It features a lot of uncoming bands. It's a great place to hear music. Did you ever play the Horseshoe?

Hey Larry,
Burke is back in Toronto for a few days. You are right, he is on tour with Luther Wright and the Wrongs. He is a very in demand musician. He plays great lap steel, pedal steel and dobro.

Man, I wish I could join you guys tonight! Sounds like the Cadillac Lounge is not far from my old house. Must be close to the old (shudder) Parkdale Tavern too (which I know now has a different name, but I can't remember it). I played some wierd gigs down there. Bob, give my regards to Burke, and to Steve Briggs, who I met when he and Burke were out here with the Brothers Cosmoline.

Boy,did I ever!! I worked there w/ Tommy Overstreet, back in the mid '70's. We were there for a month, one week. One night,2 brothers got into an argument. B4 it was over, about 15 guys were "at it". Beer bottles flyin' all over the place. I was duckin' down, behind my steel. I don't think we ever played there anymore after that. I,also, worked at the old Edison Hotel,on Younge St.,w/ the Compton Bros.,in the late '60's.

Geez Smiley, in the 80's it seemed like the Horseshoe was a dream gig compared to some of the places spread out along Queen Street. Like the Parkdale, the Edgewater, the New Edwin Hotel, the (horror of horrors) Canada Tavern (I only got talked into playing there once, but I remember that just going to the bathroom seemed to take a week), and even the Orchard Park (which I always had a soft spot for as it was my first Toronto gig). I guess you and Tommy O got spoiled out there on the road....

Bob B., the Edgewater ! haha.... that brings back memories. Would you believe it's still there, and hasn't fallen down yet ?
Bob T., give us a report on the evening... I hear there were several enthusiast going to attend. I wish I could have, but I was doing the Vine's gig in Ottawa.

John, yeah, you can see the Edgewater from the Gardiner Expressway, and I noticed the other week on my way to the airport that it was still there. I always look!

All those nights spent playing to smoky rooms full of drunken/doped up thugs!

The Orchard Park burned down, I heard. Boy, from one end to another Queen Street could swallow up a lot of pickers back in those days of six-nighters with Saturday matinees......

Sigh.

Yeah, Bob T, let's hear about last night!

Hey Bob,
You played the Canada Tavern! Yikes! You have paid your dues my man!

The Bebop Cowboys played great last Wednesday. The place was packed and the steel jury was out. It was great seeing fellow steel players support the band. The band's bag is mainly Texas Swing, country and blues standards but they have incorporated some strong original material. Every musician in the band is top notch! Howard Willett's harp playing gives the band a unique sound. The bassist Denis Pinhorn played a five year stint with the Downchild blues band. The drummer, John Adames, played with Prairie Oyster and Carol Pope. He is also one of Toronto's best jazz drummers. Steve Briggs is also known as one of Toronto's finest musicians. Burke Carroll, has played steel with all the name acts in Canada.
At times, when Burke has to leave town to play with Luther Wright and the Wrongs, Doug Johnson and I sub for him. A very challenging gig to say the least! Bob

Bob, yeah, in the fall of 87, right after I moved back to Toronto, Joe Sloan, who I had played with some in the early 80's, talked me into a week there. My marriage was kinda on the rocks, so any excuse to get out of the house looked good. It was worse than I expected it to be, and I expected it to be pretty bad. I thought Joe played some dives back in 81, but the Canada Tavern put them all to shame. Interestingly, when I moved to Vancouver in 82, Burke Carroll came along and replaced me on the Joe Sloan gig. That would have been one of Burke's earlier steel gigs I think.
