I did not realize today was his birthday but I sure miss him too. So many memories plus all the music he left us with. John Hughey was a giant on the steel guitar and a giant when it came to a human being. I visited with him a couple of times at the Texas show and he was always caring and willing to answer questions. I know God received fantastic man when he called John Hughey home. |

I miss John terribly. He was as much a gentleman as I have ever met, and I can not find words to convey my admiration for his playing. There are more great, great steel guitarists today than I can count, and they can all bring chills to my spine when they play the sweet stuff. But, with due respect to all of them, no one can match the "soul" and "feeling" that John put into his playing. John is gone, but the impact of his music will last forever. _________________ Pioneers of Western Swing HOF, Seattle 2005

http://www.woodsongs.com/showlist.asp Scroll down to archived show #447.
I just watched this again a couple days ago, you can download this entire show with the Time Jumpers and hear John's fabulous playing and him talking a little bit about the steel guitar too.
Such a tremendous loss, but he left a ton of music for us to enjoy and, I'm sure many special memories for Jean and the family. |

I feel so fortunate to have had John on my CD, even morte fortunate to have known him. I will always remember how I got to watch his creativity in the studio, and we had a ball.
Such a talent and such a gentleman. _________________ Ray Harrison

We join with all of you remembering what a great man John Hughey was. A true gentleman, and a super, extra special steel player. Jean is such a wonderful friend and we are privileged to call them 'friends'. We still call Jean's name in prayer, praying that the Lord will continue to be with her! _________________ Jerry and Venda |

I was lucky enough to both meet and see Mr. Hughey perform in Dallas ('07) and St Louis ('06). It's poignant that John, being such an emotive player, can still stir one's emotions when trying to think of what to write regarding his playing and personality. I will keep it simple and say that I consider myself a better player and person to have met him and seen him play. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

John Hughey was both a hero and friend to not just me, but a lot of steel players. I never will forget, right after I started playin' steel, I'd heard that John would be the featured player at the Southern Steel Guitar Convention in Saluda, SC, so I went to hear him and I met him after his set, and we became friends. Ater I started playin' shows, I played a few shows that he was a part of. I'm still praying for Jean and Jon's family.
