Beginners Notes #88-Birth of The Bluesy Harmonized Tetra-chord Patten Study in āDā
Thanks to Russ Wever and his thread that got me thinking along these lines. http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=170600 Be sure to check it out!
This works really well if you can raise your 1st and 4th strings with the same lever.

Hey, Dan, appreciate it. Russ opened this one up for me, not so much the lick but the process and position to position relationship. B0B wrote it out in the other thread so the position relationship is really easy to understand. Once we get that down, most any of the top four strings will work, at least that is what I'm finding. I've worked out a couple other of these licks, I'll put um up in a few.
Still working on getting that DVD for you... Don't give up on me. DS... |

Dick: Once again, thank you for your work. I am learning a lot from you.
Regarding #88, either I am not understanding you, or you mis-spoke when you said it "works really well if you can raise your 1st and 4th strings with the same lever." Wouldn't that create problems at the 1st and 8th fret positions? Could you please clarify.

Hey Paul,
You are absolutely correct. If you have the 1st string raise on the same lever as the 4th string raise activated by the "F" lever at the same time, there would be. In that instance you would always raise the first string when the "F" lever was activated(I guess you could have a half stop on that lever "F" that picked up the first string after the 4th string came to full raise). I, opted to raise the 4th string with the lever that raised the 1st string by using a rod that picked up the 4th string when the 1st was raised, but allowed the 4th string raise "F" to not effect the 1st string when the "F" lever was activated.
I installed this change to try this specific tabbed run. It is not a change I normally have on my steel even though I know some players do. And primarily because I raise my 4th & 8th LKL and 1st & 7th LKR it was not playable on my steel without this mod.
I reread the tab and see where that may be a confusing point. But if you look at it where the two changes can be activated independently, you will see no conflict exists. I have gone back and indicated in parentheses the "F" change at the sixth fret where there may have been the confusion.
I hope this clears it up for you and give a little insight as to how I approached the required change. Like I said, it is a change I did not have on my steel and is a change I no longer have because of another conflict. It is an interesting lick.
Paul, again, thanks for asking, this is how we get a clear idea of others thoughts and your question answered may serve others as well.
Thank you,
Dick Sexton |

Thanks for the response. I did not think of having a separate lever just to raise 1 & 4. I'll have to think about how such a lever could be added to my guitar. About the only possibility I can think of is a right knee vertical lever. I am not sure its possible on my old Emmons, and I am not going to give up an existing change to get this one. More importantly, would a 1 & 4 half tone raise be a useful change given the limited # of changes possible on all steels, and the limited number of knees available; or would it be just a one lick lever? If I can sort this out I'll let you know.
Thanks again. Paul |
