I've had this Fender 1000 carcass for awhile now, and finally got around to posting this......
I'd like to get it into playing shape.....but not to restore it to original or close to original specs.....this guitar has been written off the Fender active duty list......so perhaps a metamorphosis of sorts.......
As there are many builders here and knowledgeable people here,.....I thought that perhaps this could be a group project. I would need opinions and suggestions from you all.
I don't have the time or the fine skills to this myself, so I'm thinking of sending it off to various people who would do, what they do best.
For example, one person/company to strip & refinish.....one or two people for pick ups, somebody for keyheads and any other work that needs to be done. I would document this as it progresses...
Here are photos.....
Ok,....so what do I do with this?......I have a company in Ca., Wilkins, who has done some stellar refinishing for me.....
Since I can't get tuning pans, should I fill in the cavaties & go keyless, keyed,....or one of each?
Who has or makes fretboards?....what kind of bridge?, nut, electronics,.....should I install a Trilogy or a lever of sorts?
It's open season on this one gents & ladies.....tell me what I should do.....
I do have the legs for this also...... |

Winter is right around the bend, so with some rails, grips, and a seat installed, it'd make real purty sled! |

Howard, are you sure you want to refinish it?
It doesn't look tooooo bashed up . .
Anyway, I have an 8 string Trilogy that needs a job - it's been languishing in its box for about 3 years.
It's a very precise device.
I also have a Fender decal . . _________________

In person, it's really bashed up......but that's a thought.....look at the Rory Gallager Strat that Fender makes.....a custom distressed guitar....perhaps a little more distressing and then a clear finish over it......maybe satin?.....
Hmmm....the Trilogy sounds interesting....I'll keep it in the hopper....and the decal also.....
let's see how this project goes......and then I'll pull it together..... |

My first tho't is that it would make a delightfully bright and SOLID outdoor SWING SEAT. Think how up lifting that could be for our youth of today. |

I have a stack of old Fender stuff also. I had hopes of making something out of it, but I will probably just sell all of it and try to get my money back. No time to do it.
One of the things I thought about doing since you cannot get any of the tuning pans is to just set the body sections on the band saw sideways and cut off the raised area where the pan sits and fit on a pedal steel type keyhead assembly. I did some measureing and it should work.
Keyless would also be a good choice. I really think that a keyless or a keyhead assembly would enhance the sustain of the instrument more so than the thin pan set up. Food for thought. |

Bill, I thought about going keyless......I'd have to do some measuring, but I thought that if I could have the assembly in front of the cavity,.....then the cavity could be used as a place to hold bars, picks, and whatever else could fit in there...... |

Something I considered doing with mine, if I had not been able to secure some tuners, was to reverse the strings direction. In other words put the bridge at the tuner end, and fashion some tuners in a redesigned keyhead at the right hand side. With the length of the body on those Fenders, you would still have enough for a usable scale. It's unconventional but something to think about. |

Yeah it would probably look pretty cool all fixed up with the original "distressed" finish.
But then again, a nice new finish would look awesome.
The Aiello pickup is an excellent idea - nice rebuild Steve! |

Funny story ...
Kamaka Tom (Ex-President of HSGA) came up to my room in Joliet to see/try/borrow my JB Frypan with it's new pickup.
While he was there ... I showed him The Fountain that I had made Ken Ufton (his son Ian was picking it up) ...
Anyway ...
Both those pickups are very, very strong ... and Kamaka didn't have a tight enough grip on The Fountain ... and as he brought it near the pan's pup ...
It literally leaped out of his hand ... and attached itself to the nickle plated magnets on my frypan ...
It hit real hard ... but neither pup suffered any damage ... just a small nick in the nickel ...
The look on his face was priceless ... |

Speaking of pups.....what would you suggest? Two pups for each neck with a blender, two with a three way switch...one only, or one & two.....? |

Two Aiello pick-ups on one guitar could alter the space time continuum. You may tear peoples watches off their wrists if they walk by too closely. Four Aiello pick-ups, two on each neck, and you would have to post signs to warn people with Pacemakers. |

What Steve said is true ...
But I'd like to see/hear a steel guitar that had two of my Fountains ... on each neck ...
One with North up and wound clockwise ... and the other ... South up and wound counterclockwise ...
The standard humbucker config ... with a blend control ... as in Stringmasters.
My new buddy Gary Vanderlinde has a hell-of-a-steel* ... using a very strong unit of mine in this configuration ... but he used a conventional alnico pup as the neck unit (an original stringmaster pup, I think ??? ).
The output voltage was sooo dissimilar ... his brother had to place a resistor ... to bring down the output of my unit ... to where it could be "used" in concert with the stringmaster pup (a 5 way switch).
I'd be up for that kinda experiment ...
* Side note ... The "whammy bar" was a very cool feature ... wild, wild stuff
PS: Just in ... Ken Ufton's big Fountain ... in a Fender PSG ...

Man, I love this. Wish I had ideas or material to contribute.
If you need a tap broken off in it or knuckle skin & blood smeared on it, I'm your guy (just did both, real well, on a project here.) |

Howard,
Put up a couple of pics of the underside - I know your camera has a couple gigapixels to spare.
Do you intend to change it to non-pedal? |
