This was how things were kicked off on Saturday night, with Dan Tyack and Chuck Campbell. It was a nice little house band I cobbled together; most of us just met minutes before.

Dan and Chuck are just tone masters. More to follow. Unfortunately, due to the low lighting at Rodeo Bar, the video quality is terrible. I'm hoping at some point to get some of Howard's video edited in. In the meantime, it's listenable.

On Sunday, one of the bands featured was Nation Beat, with Raphael MacGregor on steel. Here they are playing their own unique twist on Brazilian music:

Slo-Mo featuring Mic Wrecka with Mike Brenner on lap steel:

OK, this whole process of getting the videos prepared is more time-consuming than I can deal with right now, but I will post them to this thread in the first post as I am able.

Check out Nation Beat, in the first post.

Sounds fantastic. Man, I wish I could of made that, but there was 3,000 miles between me and the Rodeo Bar.

Props to all the players!

Btw, who is the bass player? Is that the guy that plays with James Taylor?

Raphael and I were talking at the show and it was said that "everyone in NY plays lap steel." This is somewhat true, although with varying degrees of success.

Jack Grace said to me, "We should have a Lap Steel festival, go ahead and see what you can do." It was in honor of Drew Glackin, so it was decided that it would be a celebration of Lap steel in different contexts, not so much a history of steel guitar, but where is it today and where is it going? If we do it again next year, I'll have a lot to think about.

This festival, with the generosity of everyone involved, was an absolute joy. There wasn't much money to go around and some folks made great sacrifices. All of the musicians involved were completely low maintenance and in the case of Dan, for example, he brought Chuck Campbell in. How cool is that? Fred Kinbom had Wade Schuman sit in. Wade has a band, Hazmat Modine, which I wanted to book but couldn't make happen. And yet, things work out somehow. Tiki Daddy had Andrew Hall and Bliss Blood of the Moonlighters with them...see what I mean?

No disrespect to Mike, but Colin Alder (maker of Cruztone guitars) has put together two great lap steel festival in Santa Cruz, California for the last two years. They were called "Lapstravaganza".
