I played steel (non-pedal) back in my younger days. I have decided It is time to try to relearn all I didn't know back then. I am not having a lot of luck finding anyone who can teach me steel guitar here in Utah so can anybody suggest a book or method that would be a good starter for me? I'm not too keen on the DVD lessons as I am the kind of guy that needs to be able to look at the notes and tab. I remember back at the time I think the instructor used the Oahu lessons.

Hi Rick, I guess a good place to start is to ask what kind of music you want to learn.

I am most interested in learning to play gospel music. I'm not much for jazz or country, but gospel and some of the old songs.

Rick,

May I suggest Billy Cooper? http://www.billycooperssteelguitar.com/ Mr. Cooper has some really good instructional stuff (IMHO). I can tell you that he is devoted to the Lord, and it is quite evident in his music! I am not sure of how much his Gospel material relies on pedals and knees...but I'm sure he can help you decide if any of his material would be appropriate for you.

Terry Wood may also be able to help you. He is a great guy and a True Christian, and I know he does "custom" instruction. I don't know how to link you to him here, but he is on the forum. Give him time to get back to you if you contact him, as he doesn't keep an online computer in his home.

Please try to contact both of these gentlemen, I'm sure you'll be glad you did! Both have helped me immeasurably!

Erv Niehaus is another forum member that may be able to help. Every month he offers a new transcription of a great Gospel tune! I think most of his stuff is E9, but it couldn't hurt to contact him! I can't link him either, sorry about that.

Not gospel, but the Cindy Cashdollar Western Swing DVDs have tab with them. They are available from Homespun Tapes http://www.homespuntapes.com/ I have volume 1 and 2, and I really like them a lot. Good tab, high quality recording.

Good Luck, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Joe
