Hey Fred, your show is always an exciting time. It's a real pleasure to watch and listen to these great musicians. I still can't figure out how Boogie does it with one guitar pick! Regards to you and Donna, Bob |

I am looking forward to the show. I will have a display at the RECENCY room and plan to bring some old and unusual guitars for display. For those that like to make comparisons I will have a Zum student guitar, A Carter Starter, A Maverick conversion and a Do-it Yourself "KIT" guitar. Hopfully I can bring a video to play of the late CLAUDE BROWNELL.Come by and visit. Ed Naylor Steel Guitar Works |

This is always a great show and a nicer guy than Fred you won't find. He also has some great new players this year, one of which is the great Mike Sweeney, Nashvilles most underated player. The motel is great also with good food, rooms, and good general hospitality.
Be sure to check out the Flynn guitars also, you won't be sorry.
This is a DONT MISS SHOW !!!

I only caught the Saturday show and I understand Friday was standing room only.
Thanks again, Fred, for a great show. I seldom get down the road to see Chuck Rich at Bobbie Macky's, but I can always count on seeing him at Lexington.
We got to see Hall of Famers, Herby Wallace, John Hughey and Hal Rugg share the stage. They were followed by the great Joe Wright who, in closing the show, billed his set as "Music to Pack Up By". Jeff Newman students will appreciate the parody.
Did Neil Hilton make the show? I didn't see him Saturday.

PS: Added some great stuff to my steel CD collection. This trip I added Joe Wright, Greg Jones (his 1st CD) and Hal Rugg.

Ron - you bet, I took it all in Friday night, great crowd there as you mention, Fred seemed very pleased with the big showing - shut things down about 12:30 with Herby Wallace finishing out what was a super night.
Was my first occasion to hear Joe Wright, boy, talk about a feller that really enjoys what he's doing!! And Mike Sweeney, I was really impressed with his classic style with songs such as A-11, that was a real highlight of the night in my book, of course you mention Hughey and Rugg, they were great as well.
Had a wedding to attend over in East KY on Sat, so hated to miss day 2, but Friday night sure was great. - Neil |

Thanks Mr. Hilton. I'm glad you liked my portion of the show. I had a great time and hope I can come back again.
I guess I'll have to pay Hal before I go on next time since he said I owed him $12.00 for playing one of his old licks.LOL.
Take care.

If you owe Hal 12.00 for using his licks then Herby and John Hughey owe him a lot more. During the saturday jam both played a lot of Hal's licks with Hal on stage with them!!! Sort of a tribute to Hal Rugg.... |

I was fortunate to have a winning ticket for the drawing near the end of the show
my prize....John Heinrich's CD...when I
went over to thank him, he "warned" me that the CD was Jazz and I assured him that I was definitely a fan of Jazz and that it would get lots of play.
John plays pedal steel and horn on this CD and I felt really embarrassed that I did not know more about him...especially since he is from my home state...I seem to remember him from an ISGC some years back. Some of you that are more knowledgeable of this man and his music feel free to help me here. Fred?
At any rate, John and his "herd of horns" was in much demand throughout the show and received many rounds of applause. He played flute, soprano, tenor and alto sax in support of the steel guitar.
Anyway, Thanks for the CD John and I really enjoy it!

Thanks, Jerry, for the invitation to talk about John Heinrich. He grew up in Lexington. At some point in the late 60s,he happened to hear local steeler, Sonny Morgan, and that turned him on to steel. A young single guy, he took to steel like the proverbial duck to water, often practicing 6 - 7 hours a day. He played with several bands in various venues around Lexington during the 70s.
He left Lexington in 1979 and spent several years in Germany, playing steel there. His band won an internatonal contest (Winston cigarettes, I think)and appeared several times in the U.S. More recently he moved to Nashville where he spent nine years playing at the well-known Stockyards Restaurant there, mostly on sax. He is a great musician on steel, dobro, bass, woodwinds and flute.
We became friends in the 70s and I lost contact with him until I got an email from him last year. He sat in, by invitation, with several performers at the Lexington show. The highlight was the jam by Herby, Hal and John Hughey Saturday afternoon, where John became a fourth member in the jam. Schedules permitting, he will be back on steel at next year's show.
John can play anything from traditional country to jazz and new wave. His steel CD explores new boundaries for steel, and includes a couple of songs he wrote. Persons interested can visit his web site here [This message was edited by Fred Layman on 06 November 2002 at 06:02 PM.] |

I can't, and don't say enough about Joe Wright. He's always such and inspiration to me, although he cuts me a little too much slack because steel is not my day job.
I've been eating up Joe's Steeling The Country Classics, having added vol 1-3 on Saturday. My wife asked me if I ever listen to anything else -- I guess having forgotten that Merle Haggard CD I have . I asked her, "Why should I?" The rides Joe and the other musicians take on those tunes are out of this world.
Great show Joe... and thanks, as always, for the mandatory "Merle".
