Someone (an attorney) sent me a CD with several emails on it to review. When I put the CD into my D drive and try to open the folder I get a message that says Windows can not open the email because it doesn't know which program created it? All the files are .msg files. How can I open and read these emails?

It appears that .msg is a proprietary format that is related to emails created with Microsoft Outlook. MS Outlook is the email client of choice for many businesses. If you have MS Office Suite, you may have a version of MS Outlook on the CD, or already installed on a Windows PC that shipped with Office preinstalled. If you have MS Outlook on a CD, try installing it, but don't make it your default email handler.

I don't have Office Suite. Are you saying that I need MS Outlook to open them? Is that the only program that will open them? Seems like I had an Office 2003 around here somewhere,,,maybe I had it on a previous computer?

Yes, you will need MS Outlook installed to open these files. They are encoded in a proprietary binary format, owned by Microsoft. Outlook 2003 should do the trick, if you have it already.

You can purchase MS Outlook 2007 from Microsoft, or online, for $109.00. You can probably find it for a bit less at office supply, or discount software stores, or computer shows. Just be sure it has a valid, never before used license key.

No. Open Office has nothing to do with Microsoft and cannot open .msg email file types.

But, you can use Google to find cheaper sources of MS Outlook 2007. You can probably get it for under $50n brand new, if you look around. Just make sure that the Product Key is guaranteed to be valid. There are a lot of people selling previously licensed Microsoft programs without telling you. When you try to license it you learn the cold hard truth.

If you believe that you will need to open a lot of these messages, go buy a valid copy of Outlook. It is also available as part of many Microsoft Office suites.
