Some really good music on late night TV last night. Anybody else see the BSO on Conan? Did a tune titled "Trouble Train" with the big orchestra...and all dressed to the 9's. Brian playing the Gretsch Black Phoenix 6136 model. What a special endeavor for Brian keeping this big band working.
Brian, I salute your dedication. Stray Cat Strut to Dig that Crazy Santa Claus, you have proven it can be done both ways.
Between rockabilly combos and the big band, he's realized his dreams and brought a smile a lot of people in the process. That's Entertainment! |

Hey Jerry, I can't stand Conan but when I saw in the guide that Brian was going to be there with his orchestra I had to tune in. I think he's a musical genius with what he's got going these days. I thought that when the Stray Cats called it quits that we'd never hear from him again but he's still out there doing it and is one of the premier guitarists in the business and probably selling as many Gretsch guitars as Chet did in his heyday....JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

Yeah, the Stray Cats, also a combo '68 Comeback Special a few years ago. Greasy, dripping wet guitar solos and instrumentals, which are just about a thing of the past. Tunes like Malaguena, Sleepwalk, Harlem Nocturne, TV themes and movie tracks.
Disciple of Eddie Cochran, says he never wanted to do anything else. Nails the sound he wants with those big Gretsch's and Bassmans.
I can only imagine what it costs and what a fee he must have to charge to deliver this big band. I doubt he's getting rich with it, yet he continues. |

Just shortly before they hit with "Stray Cat Strut" I was lucky to catch the Stray Cats in a crazy little basement club in Hull. There were just the three of them: guitar, upright bass and snare drum, and they were just pumpin' it out ! I'd never heard of them before, but I'm glad I went.
Brian Setzer played the Ottawa Bluesfest this past summer with the big band, and it was a great show. It's nice to see somebody enjoying themselves that much after all these years. There was spontaneous swing dancing breaking out on the grass all over the place that night.

Dude has fallen in love with the Thunderbolt. He discovered this amp via the engineer that helped him on his recent recordings and said it was the sound he'd been looking for. Cool!
And don't worry about Brian. The guy's not eating wishwiches and has got it totally together, even has lost much of the weight he'd gained living the too good life.
Too bad the Cat's have such a hard time selling their primo product. It's really disappointing to the band, but they will always get together at times and be doing Stray Cat's shows.
Eddie Cochran lives! |

Yes, the sound last night was a bit grittier and tighter than what I'm used to hearing from Setzer. I wasn't sure how I liked it. I didn't know if it was the Supro or just his overall tone settings. I wouldn't expect the TV Jones Phoenix would sound much diff than his signature 6120's. |
