What in the world can you clean springs with? One side allways has the black spot on it that i can't get off. It looks terrible. Thanks in advance.

Hey Jimmy...have you tried to soak them in lacquer thinner for a couple of hours, that is strong stuff and use a soft metal or brass brush wheel that you put on bench grinder that should do the trick and it will polish them at the same time, try the brush wheel first and if it doesn't all come off you can try the thinner but the brush should take care of it, i use the a soft metal brush wheel to polish nuts and bolts all the time and comes out just like new. Springs? You mean the lower-return springs? They generally get tarnished where you touch them while moving the guitar, as the plating is only a few millionths of an inch thick. You can clean them, and polish them, and they'll tarnish again even faster (since any cleaning and polishing takes off more of their protective plating).

You have two choices to keep them looking good without replacing or continually polishing them. You can just polish them and try to keep them lightly oiled - or you can take them off, stretch them a little between 2 nails on a board, and then spray them with either a thin coat of clear lacquer, or even some aluminum paint.

I think if you paint them or put lacquer on your springs it will affect the tone cause your springs is attached and making contact with your changer fingers and end plates, best thing if you don't want to polish them is to put new ones.

Pat, I think that's splitting hairs though, really...
Ok..take that coat of lacquer The contact with the lacquer in both ends of the spring is obliterated as soon as you tighten the thing and put tension on it. Anyway, I can't for the best of me see how that would have any effect at all on the tone chain.
MO of course

Pat, that's worse than saying that black sounds best

when everyone knows that green sounds the best Laughing

,

It was just an assomtion Bent...you could probably be right, i WOULD NEVER put paint or lacquer on springs because of the stretching and such would probably crack the finish, it's not worth the time and money, better to polish them or replace them with new ones...just my opinion Razz
